Continued Inspections Today for ‘Singing Bridge’ in Downtown Frankfort

Bridge remains closed to all vehicle, pedestrian traffic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 11, 2024) Continued inspections and testing of the U.S. 60X “Singing Bridge” that spans the Kentucky River will take place in downtown Frankfort today.

Engineers from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and the Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) will work to determine the full extent of structural issues and gather data that will help determine the next steps. Ensuring the safety of the public and the structure remains a priority. For now, the bridge’s closure remains indefinite.

Drivers and pedestrians who normally use the bridge, which serves approximately 3,400 vehicles daily, should continue to follow the detour via the U.S. 60 (Capital Avenue) bridge.

As a precaution to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians, the 130-year-old bridge was closed on Aug. 30 after a routine inspection identified significant structural deterioration that affects its weight-carrying capacity. Prior to the closure, the bridge had been operating under a 4-ton weight limit established following a 2022 inspection. The 2024 inspection identified further deterioration in additional steel supports and connections. The bridge undergoes an annual inspection to monitor its condition.
