Construction Progressing on KY 70 Bridge in Hopkins County
Roadway expected to reopen in early November
MADISONVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 19, 2024) – Work continues on the 59 year-old KY 70 (Beulah Road) bridge over Richland Creek in Hopkins County, but delays during construction have resulted in the completion date being pushed back by just over a month.
The $1.5 million state highway improvement project began on June 24, with an estimated completion by the end of September. Water retention issues at the temporary coffer dam in the construction site forced the placement of the bridges support beams to be delayed.
With the problem alleviated, work has continued to move forward, but the completion date has been pushed back until the end of the first week in November.
There is a marked detour in place for the duration of the project. The detour route is awaiting final approval, but the proposal would utilize Carbondale Road, Witchcraft Road and Elva Road. Due to the presence of low and narrow overhead railroad crossings on that route, large commercial vehicles and farm equipment are urged to select a different route.
The bridge carries the more than 2,000 vehicles that use KY 70 each day.
The work is being done by Hinkle Construction Services LLC under a contract with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
