Project to Reconfigure Intersection of KY 81 and KY 181 to Start Next Week
KYTC anticipates completion by the end of November
MADISONVILLE, Ky. (September 3, 2024) – A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans an extended closure KY 181 at the intersection of KY 181 and KY 81 in northern Muhlenberg County beginning Monday, Sept. 9 as a nearly $400,000 project to improve safety and visibility for motorists gets under way.
The intersections, located between Bremen and Sacramento at the 7.3 mile point of KY 81, just yards south of the McLean County line, is currently a "Y" intersection. Under its current configuration, KY 181 merges with KY 81 at a sharp angle, creating limited visibility issues.
KYTC is reconfiguring the intersection so that KY 181 will approach KY 81 at a much safer angle, providing motorists with a clear sightline in both directions.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of November.
Motorists can detour around the closure using KY 175, which intersects KY 81 and KY 181 about a mile south of the project.
KY 81 should remain open throughout the project, although lane restrictions with flaggers are possible. Appropriate caution is required where equipment, flaggers, and personnel are along the roadway in close proximity to traffic flow.
