Work at Tennessee River Bridge Shifting to Eastbound I-24 Beginning Tonight

All lanes will be open over the holiday weekend

PADUCAH, Ky. (Aug. 29, 2024)  A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has planned work at the twin Tennessee River Bridges on I-24 that will begin overnight tonight and will likely cause some traffic delays tomorrow, Friday, August 30, after midnight.

The bridges are located at the 29.2 mile point of Interstate 60 between Grand Rivers and Calvert City.

Tonight, crews will begin moving equipment from the work zone on the westbound bridge to the eastbound side of the interstate. This work should be completed with the existing traffic restrictions, and no significant additional impact on motorists is expected.

On Friday night at midnight, the contractor plans to begin a rolling roadblock on I-24 westbound as crews remove the remainder of the equipment and rigging from the westbound bridge and begin staging it for the eastbound side.

Once this move is completed, both east and westbound lanes will be open. The existing lane shift in the westbound lanes will remain in place. There will be no work on the bridge this weekend due to the Labor Day holiday.

On Tuesday, Sept. 3, crews will begin setting up barriers and hanging rigging on the eastbound bridge in preparation for the planned painting of the bridge. This could take 2 - 4 days, during which occasional single lane closures are possible. If necessary, these closures will be occur during overnight hours.

More information on possible restrictions and work schedules for the eastbound bridge will be announced as work progresses.

Motorists looking to self-detour can do so via U.S. 62 and KY 453 between Calvert City Exit 27 and Grand Rivers Exit 31.

There will be message boards on the interstate to inform motorists of changing road conditions as the project advances.

Spartan Contracting is the prime contractor on this $16,353,000 bridge rehabilitation and maintenance project.  The target completion date for all work is December 1, 2024.

The Interstate 24 Tennessee River Bridge consists of twin tied-arch suspension bridges at I-24 mile point 29.352 at the Marshall-Livingston County Line.

The 2,017 ft. bridge with a  534 ft. main span is also known as the Luther Draffen Bridge.  The bridge opened to traffic in 1974.  The twin structures carry approximately 30,000 vehicles across the Tennessee River in an average day.

The bridge is at Tennessee River navigation mile point 21.1, about a mile below Kentucky Dam.
