Highway Safety Project Begins on US 119 in Pike County
Watch for traffic impacts and slow down in work zones
PIKEVILLE, Ky.(August 19, 2024) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet advises the public of a Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) project that will improve traffic conditions on US 119 in Pike County. The project is located in the South Williamson area at the intersection of KY 292 (mp24.5) and the intersection of KY 1506 (mp24.9).
The project will add safety features to the section between KY-292 (Aflex) and the KY-1506 intersection (Second Avenue). Left-hand turn lanes will be added from US-119 Southbound into the Zip Zone Express entrance and the two Appalachian Plaza entrances. Delineator paddles will be placed in the median to permanently control these turn lanes and make them safe for the traveling public. Lastly, a dedicated U-turn lane at the KY-1506 intersection will be added for Northbound traffic to utilize as needed.
Motorists can expect traffic impacts, lane closures, and safety control throughout the duration of the project. Because US 119 is heavily traveled, lane closures can create lengthy backups and delays, especially during peak travel times. Motorists are asked to plan for delays and heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones, and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
Mountain Enterprises, Inc. has been contracted to do the work.
Road work schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. The project is expected to take eight to ten weeks to complete.
