Work Starts on $2.7 Million Bridge Replacement on KY 1 in Carter County

New bridge at Willard to provide safer, longer-lasting highway connection

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (July 3, 2024)  Work begins next week on a $2.7 million project to replace the aging KY 1 bridge across the Little Fork of the Little Sandy River near Willard in Carter County. The new bridge will provide a safer, longer-lasting highway connection for Kentuckians who rely on the northeastern state highway.

Contractors will build the new bridge at the same location as the old bridge about two miles north of the Lawrence County line. In order to keep traffic flowing during construction, traffic changes will be required:

  • Beginning Monday, July 8, contractors will restrict KY 1 to one lane across the bridge (milepoint 2.4), with all traffic controlled by temporary traffic signals.
  • Traffic will alternate one direction at a time across the bridge. A 12-foot width restriction will be in place in the open lane. Motorists should expect delays.

The bridge replacement project is expected to take until May 2025 to complete.

Work is being done by Walker Construction and Materials LLC under a $2,696,780 low-bid Kentucky Transportation Cabinet contract.
