Pride Parkway (KY 16) Microsurface Paving Project in Kenton County to Start Thursday, June 27

Preventative maintenance will extend life of asphalt roadway

COVINGTON, Ky. (June 26, 2024) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 6 Office announces a microsurface paving project on Pride Parkway (KY 16) beginning Thursday, June 27.

Crews will be working on Pride Parkway from Klette Road (KY 2047) (mile point 8.96) extending north to Waymans Branch/Taylor Mill Road (KY 3716) (mile point 10.73), a distance of 1.77 miles. Work is scheduled to occur between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Single lane closures will take place throughout the entirety of the project. One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction. Occasionally, crews may be required to stop traffic at an intersection for a short period of time.

When working around Klette Road where Pride Parkway narrows to two lanes, flaggers will be utilized to guide traffic around the work area.

On Thursday, June 27, the contractor will remove thermoplastic pavement markings ahead of the scheduled microsurface treatment. Beginning the week of July 8, contractors will mobilize equipment to the site and begin applying the treatment to the roadway. Contractors will return to the project site one week after finishing the application to apply permanent striping.

Microsurface paving is a surface treatment designed to extend the life of asphalt roadway surfaces that are still in good condition. The new surface will protect and preserve pavement against road deterioration by providing better skid resistance, restricting moisture intrusion, reducing oxidation and raveling, and restoring the roadway profile and characteristics.

"This preventative maintenance project will extend the life of this section of KY 16 for years to come," said Bob Yeager, Chief District Engineer of KYTC's District 6 Office, "It comes at a fraction of the cost compared to a standard roadway resurfacing."

The cost-saving microsurface paving project on Pride Parkway is one of many similar KYTC District 6 projects: KY 16 from KY 3716 (Taylor Mill Road) to the south end of the Interstate 275 overpass, Alexandria Pike (U.S. 27) from Marl-Rich Lane to the intersection of KY 824/Race Track Road, AA Highway (KY 9) north of I-275 ramps to Johns Hill Road and KY 17 north of the I-275 ramps.

This work is being done at night to mitigate traffic impacts as much as possible. Motorists are advised to slow down and be cautious when driving through the project area. Sweepers will be on-site to clean up any loose material during the project.

The project is being done by Strawser Construction, Inc., under a $580,169 low-bid Kentucky Transportation Cabinet contract. The project has an expected completion date of Sept. 30, 2024.

The date, time, and duration of work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
