Contractor Identified for Kennedy Bridge Repair; Partial Lane Closures Remain in Place
Repair schedule expected next week
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 24, 2024) – The Transportation Cabinet has identified a contractor to repair a damaged expansion joint on Interstate 65 South across the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge in Louisville. Engineers expect to have a repair schedule in place next week. Until repairs can be made, temporary lane closures remain to safeguard travelers.
On Monday, May 20, crews closed a short section of the left three bridge lanes beginning around mile marker 137 near the Indiana approach due to a damaged finger joint in an interior travel lane.
Engineers assessed the damage, designed a repair plan, and have now acquired a bridge contractor to make repairs. A contract is being executed to safely reopen lanes as quickly as possible.
Currently, lane closures remain in place to avoid damage to vehicles traveling over the bridge. Approaching the bridge from Indiana, the left three lanes are closed, while the right three lanes remain open to traffic. All six lanes are open once past the damaged joint.
The bridge is structurally sound and is safe to carry traffic. An expansion joint is a component of the bridge deck, or travel surface, that allows for thermal expansion and contraction due to changes in weather to prevent concrete from cracking.
Motorists traveling southbound on I-65 from Indiana should plan for merging traffic and expect delays or seek alternate routes by using navigation apps such as Waze.
The date and duration of road work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
