Traffic Advisory: Lane Closures Under Clark Memorial Bridge Begin May 28 for Inspections
Hands-on bridge inspections require local street lane closures in Kentucky and Indiana
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 20, 2024) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of upcoming lane closures on streets under the Clark Memorial Bridge in Louisville and Jeffersonville, Ind., for routine bridge inspections that occur every two years. The hands-on inspections are scheduled to begin May 28 on the bridge, which carries U.S. 31 across the Ohio River between Louisville, Ky. and Jeffersonville, Ind.
To accommodate snooper trucks and other access equipment, daily lane closures under the Clark Memorial Bridge on North Second Street (near the KFC Yum! Center) and in Jeffersonville, Ind. on West Market Street/West Riverside Drive will be necessary beginning Tuesday, May 28, and continuing through Friday, May 31. Work will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help alleviate impacts to rush hour traffic. Motorists will be directed through the work zone via flagging.
During the week of June 10, bridge inspectors will climb the steel truss during daytime hours. No lane closures will be necessary, but some of their equipment will be staged on the sidewalks along the bridge.
These inspections are part of Kentucky’s commitment to continually review the integrity of roadway structures. State and contracted engineers inspect more than 14,000 bridges every two years.
Following the March 1 crash involving a semi, bridge engineers also conducted a special hands-on inspection of the Clark Memorial Bridge at the crash site, confirming the identified damages did not affect its structural integrity. Repairs to the damaged sidewalk structure, designed to support pedestrian traffic, not vehicular traffic, were completed in mid-April.
Motorists should use caution when traveling through the area, adjust for increased travel times, and seek alternate routes by using navigation apps like Waze.
The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
