Traffic will be in final configuration following traffic switch
COVINGTON, Ky. (May 3, 2024) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of a traffic switch on KY 536 (Mt. Zion Road) in Boone County on Thursday, May 9.
Crews will perform a traffic switch on KY 536 between the 13.2 mile point and 14.7 mile point, a distance of 1.5 miles. Once the traffic switch is completed, the road will be in its final traffic configuration.
Once traffic has been switched, crews will begin paving the final surface in the project area on Monday, May 13. Motorists should expect various lane closures in place throughout the project area. Two-way traffic will be maintained when possible. Additionally, flaggers will be used near the two roundabouts in the project area.
Project Background
A widening and safety improvement project on KY 536 (Mt. Zion Road) from U.S. 25 (Dixie Highway) to KY 1303 (Bristow Road) began in Spring 2022.
Project improvements include:
- Widening from two to four lanes of vehicular traffic.
- A new right turn lane for traffic turning right from KY 536 to Toebben Drive.
- Addition of two roundabouts:
- At the intersection of KY 536 and Sigmon Lane.
- On KY 536, approximately one-third of a mile west of Turkeyfoot Road.
- A raised median between the two roundabouts, which will prevent drivers from turning left between the two roundabouts.
- A multi-use path on both sides of KY 536 along the entire length of the project.
- Traffic signal improvements.
- Curb and gutter improvements, as well as storm sewer and drainage work.
The widening of this section of KY 536 will improve safety and support better traffic flow in this growing area. The new roadway will provide more capacity, feature wider lane widths and improve sight distance. Upgraded traffic signals will help traffic move more efficiently throughout the corridor and multi-use paths will improve pedestrian safety.
The project has an expected completion of Summer 2024.
This project is part of a series of widening/safety improvement projects along the KY 536 corridor to meet traffic flow and safety needs. Construction on the next section of KY 536 from KY 1303 (Bristow Road) to Williamswoods Drive began on Monday, April 22.
