I-69 Exit 111 NB at KY 2171 in Hopkins County to be Closed this Weekend

Contractor to Apply High Friction Surface Treatment

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (April 12, 2024) – A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to close northbound Exit 111 of Interstate 69 in Madisonville this weekend to apply a new high friction treatment.

High friction surface treatments (HFST) are pavement treatments designed to increase friction in potentially high crash areas, resulting in motorists being able to maintain better control in both wet and dry driving conditions.

A research report published by the Federal Highway Administration suggests that HFST reduce wet crashes by as much as 83 percent and total crashes by 57 percent.

Weather permitting, northbound Exit 111 to KY 2171/ "the Earlington Cut-Off" will close beginning at 3 p.m. today, Friday, April 12, 2024, and reopen by 6 a.m. on Monday, April 15.

There will be no marked detour. The closest alternative northbound exits are Exit 108 to KY 813 at Mortons Gap and Exit 114 to KY 70 in Madisonville.

This project is part of the Highway Safety Improvement Program. The same treatment was applied to the southbound exit ramp last weekend.

Appropriate caution is required where equipment, flaggers, and personnel are along the roadway in close proximity to traffic flow.
