Traffic Switch on I-275 Westbound in Boone County for Resurfacing Project on Thursday, March 7
UPDATE: Timeline of traffic impacts
UPDATE (March 5, 2024) -- The contractor has provided an updated schedule, which includes a traffic switch, on I-275 westbound in Boone County:
Wednesday, March 6, from 8:30 p.m., to Thursday, March 7, at 5 a.m.: a single right lane closure for partial-depth patching work on I-275 westbound from the Boone/Kenton County line (mile point 1.58) to west of the KY 212 (Airport Access Road) (4.7 mile point), a distance of 3.12 miles.
Thursday, March 7, from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.: the single right lane closure will remain in place, and I-275 westbound in the area listed above will be reduced to two lanes.
Thursday, March 7, from 9 p.m. to Friday, March 8, Early AM: a double right lane closure will be in place on I-275 westbound as crews remove striping, and re-stripe in preparation for a traffic switch.
Friday, March 8, Early AM: the contractor will perform a traffic switch by re-opening the right two lanes of traffic, and closing the left lane of I-275 westbound in the area listed above. Once the traffic switch has been completed, there will be two lanes of vehicular traffic in the project area. This lane configuration will be in place 24/7 as crews will perform full-depth patching.
NOTE: Once the traffic switch has been completed -- the exit off-ramp from I-275 westbound to KY 212 (Airport Access Road toward CVG) will no longer have a specific lane to decelerate before the exit ramp. Motorists are encouraged to slow down prior to the exit, and drive carefully through this area.
Motorists should find alternate routes during peak travel periods. Message boards are in place warning motorists of the upcoming lane closures, and traffic switch on I-275 westbound. Please, drive carefully near the work zone to keep our crews safe.
COVINGTON, Ky. (Aug. 22, 2023) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 6 Office announces lane closures on I-275 in Boone County beginning Sunday, Aug. 27, as part of a resurfacing project.
Crews will be working on I-275 between the Boone/Kenton County line (mile point 1.58), to west of the KY 237 (Hebron Exit) at the 7.25 mile point, a distance of 5.67 miles. The project will include partial/full-depth concrete patching and diamond grinding. Additionally, the KY 3076 (Mineola Pike), KY 212 (Airport Access Road), and KY 237 (Hebron) on/off exit ramps will be resurfaced.
During ramp work, traffic on the exit ramps in the project area will be maintained at partial-width (11 ft. minimum) lanes. The project will require the off-ramp from I-275 westbound to KY 212 (Airport Access Road) to be temporarily closed on pre-approved scheduled weekends. KYTC will make an announcement via updated press release/social media ahead of the closure to keep motorists informed, and provide detour information during the closure.
Weather permitting, beginning Sunday, Aug. 27, road crews will shift I-275 westbound traffic in the project area to the inside shoulder to begin addressing partial-depth patch work.
Traffic may be reduced to one lane in each direction during the following times:
- Weeknights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
- Weekends from 9 p.m. Friday, until 5 a.m. the following Monday.
The contractor will maintain a minimum of two lanes of traffic in each direction at all other times.
Work on the project will be performed in phases. These phases include milling/resurfacing of asphalt exit ramps, removing/replacing pavement, diamond grinding, saw/seal joints and placing permanent striping and pavement markers.
The main benefits of properly using diamond grinding include a smoother ride, reduced road noise and improved friction.
No work will occur on the following days:
- Labor Day Weekend (Sept. 1-4)
- Thanksgiving Weekend (Nov. 23-26)
- Christmas Weekend (Dec. 22-25)
- New Year’s Weekend (Dec. 29, 2023 – Jan. 1, 2024)
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day Weekend (Jan. 12-15, 2024)
- Easter Weekend (March 29-31, 2024)
- Memorial Day Weekend (May 24-27, 2024)
Please drive carefully through the project area. Motorists are advised to find an alternate route during working hours.
KYTC has been in communication with the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), Boone County Emergency Management and other first responder agencies ahead of the upcoming resurfacing project.
The $4 million project was awarded to Eaton Asphalt of Walton, KY. The project is expected to be completed by June 30, 2024.
The date, time, and duration of work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Motorists can get Northern Kentucky road construction updates on the District 6 Roadshow.
