Kentucky Highway 1793 equipped with new crosswalks and turn lanes
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Feb. 12, 2024) – The shared campus of Harmony Elementary and North Oldham Middle and High Schools will benefit from the completed school highway safety project on Kentucky Highway 1793 in Oldham County. The $1.27 million project was awarded in June 2023 as part of Gov. Andy Beshear’s initiative to improve highway safety near schools. The project improves traffic flow to create a safer environment for students traveling to and from school on foot.
Crosswalks have been installed across KY 1793 at Hampton Circle opposite Harmony Elementary School and Longwood Lane across from North Oldham Middle and High School campuses. Additionally, Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) are installed and operating at each crosswalk. RRFBs use a flashing pattern, similar to emergency vehicles, and alert motorists of pedestrians once activated by pushing a button. Gov. Beshear recently visited Harmony Elementary School to celebrate progress on the project.
“This project builds on our commitment to invest in our public schools and create safer roadways,” said Gov. Beshear. “The new crosswalks and turn lanes in Oldham County will make it easier for students to safely walk to school, as well as enhance traffic flow and safety.”
The project also included the construction of right and left turn lanes. The right turn lane, stretching from the North Oldham Middle School entrance to the shared North Oldham Middle and High School entrances, enhances traffic flow and safety.
To date, 30 projects have been completed across the commonwealth that enhance highway safety near schools.
