Work Ramping Up on $46 Million US 60 Rebuild in Boyd County

Watch for increased truck traffic entering, leaving highway

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (Feb. 8, 2024) – After a winter slowdown, work to rebuild US 60 in Boyd County will ramp up in the coming weeks along the four-mile construction zone from Coalton to Cannonsburg. It’s part of a $46 million project aimed at improving safety and reducing traffic congestion for residents traveling to work, school, healthcare centers, and other destinations in the Ashland region.

This week, contractors restarted some excavation work. Motorists should watch for trucks or other equipment entering and leaving the roadway – particularly where the old roadbed is being dug up or dirt and rock are being moved.

Excavation and construction, such as building new sections of roadway, new bridges, and utility relocations, will continue to increase as weather improves.

Speed limits have been reduced to 35 miles per hour for safety. Motorists should expect delays, and intermittent flagged traffic. Road signs and electronic message boards will be used to alert motorists of traffic changes.

Currently, the following traffic changes are in place for the highway project:

  • US 60 is shifted onto and off new pavement near Addington Road (fairgrounds) at Coalton and Princeland Drive, milepoints 1.15 to 1.91; and between Paul Coffee Boulevard and KY 180 near Cannonsburg, milepoints 2.72 to 4.
  • All lanes of US 60 are restricted to 10 feet maximum width. Motorists should expect narrow travel lanes, watch for flagged traffic, and construction vehicles entering and leaving the highway.
  • All KY 5 traffic is detoured to a temporary intersection slightly west using Princess Drive. Motorists should use caution.
  • Princeland Drive is closed at US 60 at Princess. All traffic is detoured using Princess Drive/Kelly Drive.
  • Midland Trail access from US 60 is closed on the Court of Three Sisters end near Princeland. All Midland Trail traffic should use the new entrance just west of that location.

Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.

IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

The Transportation Cabinet’s upgrade of US 60 will transform four miles of the old, narrow state highway between Coalton and Cannonsburg into a straighter, three-lane-style roadway linking I-64 and the greater Ashland area. Walker Construction and Materials, LLC, was awarded the contract for the project.

Improvements include two wider thru-traffic lanes, center and right-turn lanes, and paved shoulders, as well as better KY 5 and KY 180 intersections, and replacement of three aging bridges.

Once complete later this year, the project will increase safety, relieve traffic congestion, and enhance regional connectivity along the heavily traveled route, which feeds 12,000 vehicles a day into downtown Ashland as well as to and from shopping centers, the local landfill, and the Paul Coffey Industrial Park.
