Nightly Lane Closures on I-275 in Kenton County for Diamond Grinding Project Beginning Thursday, Feb. 1

Project expected to be completed June 2024

COVINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 25, 2024) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 6 Office announces nightly lane closures on I-275 in Kenton County beginning Thursday, Feb. 1, as part of a resurfacing project.

Crews will be working on I-275 between the Campbell/Kenton County line (mile point 77.6), extending north to U.S. 25 Overpass (mile point 82.5), a distance of 4.89 miles.

Work on the project will be performed in phases. The project will include diamond grinding and grooving of pavement, crack sealing, cleaning bridge drains and placing permanent striping and pavement markers.

Diamond grinding is a high-friction surface treatment, which involves adding a layer of aggregates on the pavement. The main benefits of using this treatment include a smoother ride, reduced road noise and improved friction and safety.

Weather permitting, beginning Thursday, Feb. 1, contractors will shift I-275 westbound traffic in the project area to the outside lane to remove existing pavement markers. The left two lanes will be closed. On Sunday, Feb. 4, contractors will begin diamond grinding operations. Once the westbound side is complete, crews will move to the eastbound section.

Traffic impacts associated with the work:

  • Contractors will primarily work Sunday night through Thursday night. Other nights will be utilized if weather prohibits work during the weekday.
    • Single lane closure permitted nightly at 8 p.m.
    • Double lane closure permitted nightly beginning at 10 p.m.
  • All lanes must be reopened by 6 a.m.
  • All on and off ramps will remain open throughout the project duration

No work will occur on the following days:

  • Easter Weekend (March 29 – 31, 2024)
  • Memorial Day Weekend (May 24 – 27, 2024)

This project is separate from the other diamond grinding and pavement repair project also taking place on I-275 between the Boone/Kenton County line (mile point 1.58), to west of the KY 237 (Hebron Exit) at the 7.25 mile point.

Project updates will be provided on our social media accounts. Weekly updates will also be provided on our roadshow report, which are linked below.

Please drive carefully through the project area. Motorists are advised to find an alternate route during working hours.

The $7,139,275 million project was awarded to MAC Construction & Excavating Inc of Louisville, KY. The project is expected to be completed by June 30, 2024.

The date, time, and duration of work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
