KY 58 in Hickman County Restricted to 3-Ton Limit and One Lane Traffic at 4.9mm

Subheading H2 Heading Supporting Text Goes Here

PADUCAH, Ky. (January 21, 2024)  The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has restricted a section of KY 58 in Hickman County to a 3-ton load limit and one-lane traffic.

KY 58 is restricted to a 3-ton load limit on the Obion Creek Bridge at the 4.92 mile marker after inspectors found deterioration of floor beams on the structure during a recent inspection.

A review of the inspection report by the KYTC Division of Bridge Maintenance bridge preservation analysis staff prompted the following posting notice:

"Post at 3 tons for all vehicles and restrict to one lane down the center of the bridge, due to the condition of the superstructure."

KYTC District 1 has posted the bridge at 3-tons, which restricts the bridge to vehicles no larger than a passenger vehicle or unloaded pickup truck.  Additionally, the bridge will be restricted to one lane with alternating flow controlled by an automated signal.  Traffic barrels will restrict traffic to traveling the center line of the bridge deck while engineers develop a repair plan for the deteriorated beams.

The Obion Creek Bridge has a 30 ft. pony truss main span.  It opened to traffic in 1929.  It was previously posted with a 20-ton load limit before being lowered to 3-tons.  The structure is located along KY 58 between KY 1772 and KY 1540 - about halfway between Clinton and Columbus.  Approximately 575 vehicles travel this section of KY 58 in an average day.

All Kentucky bridges get a detailed inspection every two years, with long-span river and lake bridges getting an additional walk-through inspection annually.  Bridges tat are posted at less than 15 tons generally get more frequent safety checks.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is responsible for inspecting bridges on all public roadways in the Commonwealth.

Truckers who hold a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) are required to take note of bridge limit signage and are responsible for obeying load weight restrictions.

KYTC District 1 will attempt to provide timely updates as a repair plan is developed for the KY 58 Obion Creek Bridge.
