Area residents attend public meeting on KY 82 improvements in Estill County
Public comment period runs through Dec. 26
JACKSON, Ky. – Approximately 30 area residents attended a public meeting Monday, Dec. 11, to get information and offer input on potential road improvements to KY 82 in Estill County.
A project is under development to improve KY 82 between the KY 89 intersection at Hargett and the start of the segment of highway near the Powell County line that was reconstructed in 2007. The project would widen the existing road and shoulders; realign the road in the vicinity of Twin Creek Road and Lilly Ferry Road (milepoints 1.6-2.1), and reconstruct the intersection of KY 82 and KY 89 at Hargett. This project will incorporate the curve realignment between Ironworks Road and Linus Fore Road that is currently under construction.
KY 82 is the major route connecting Estill and Powell counties, and provides a link between Irvine and Ravenna to the Mountain Parkway. It carries approximately 3,650 vehicles per day and has been the site of numerous crashes in the past five years. This project would improve safety and connectivity. The existing route has 10-foot travel lanes with minimal shoulders. The new route would have 11-foot travel lanes with six-foot paved shoulders.
Attendees at the public meeting, held at Estill County High School, were able to view displays showing the possible improvements under consideration and speak with Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and engineering consultant personnel about the proposals. Those displays are available for viewing at the Department of Highways District 10 office in Jackson.
The project is in the preliminary design phase. After the public comment period ends, KYTC will choose a final alignment. No construction date has yet been established for this project.
Written comments on the project will be accepted through Tuesday, Dec. 26. These public comments will be taken into consideration as the decision on the final alignment is made. Written comments can be submitted via mail or email to Aric Skaggs, KYTC District 10, P.O. Box 621, Jackson KY 41339, aric.skaggs@ky.gov.
