KYTC District 1 Roadshow: Traffic Impact Report for Week of Nov 5-11
District 1 includes Fulton, Hickman, Carlisle, Ballard, McCracken, Graves, Calloway, Marshall, Livingston, Crittenden, Lyon & Trigg counties
PADUCAH, KY (November 3, 2023) -- The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet anticipates ongoing work zone construction and long-term maintenance activities at the following locations will impact traffic the week of Nov 5-11. More detailed information on these work zones with maps can be found on our Facebook page listed below.
I-69/U.S. 45 Mayfield Exit 25 Restrictions This Week (NEW) Watch for a work zone to allow milling and paving along Interstate 69 and U.S. 45 at the Mayfield Exit 25 Interchange starting Monday. This work zone includes ramp closures at the interchange. The contractor will be milling and paving to smooth bridge end transitions, to smooth pavement on U.S. 45, and at the U.S. 45-KY 1830/Jimtown Road intersection. This work zone extends northward along I-69 to include the P&L Railroad Overpass and the Mayfield Creek Bridge. During the closure of ramps at I-69 Exit 25, motorists will be directed to detour via the KY 121 Mayfield Exit 24 interchange through about Nov. 8.
I-24 Work Zone at 28mm in Marshall County starts Tuesday (NEW) Both eastbound and westbound motorists on I-24 should be alert for a work zone lane restriction near the 28-mile marker to allow milling and paving of bridge and overpass approaches Initially, all traffic will move to the left-hand or passing lane to allow the contractor to mill out the driving lane approaches. The contractor will return the next day to pave. Traffic will then be shifted to allow the same process on the passing lane. This work zone will remain up around the clock through Friday, Nov. 10. The KYTC Marshall County Highway Maintenance Crew will be pre-positioning traffic control equipment for this work zone on Monday, Nov. 6. This is part of a larger project to smooth overpass approaches along I-24 and I-69 over the next two weeks. Please be alert for traffic advisories for additional work zone locations as the work progresses.
Old U.S. 60 Cumberland River Bridge Demolition Nov. 16 or 27 (UPDATE) Explosive demolition of the Old U.S. 60 Cumberland River Bridge at Smithland is planned Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023, with weather a deciding factor. Explosive demolition of the old bridge will require the new bridge to close approx. 9 a.m., to 11:30 a.m., the day of the blast. All boat traffic will be halted for 24 hours on the Cumberland River. There will be a strictly enforced 1,500 ft. clear zone around the blast site. Plans include a viewing area for the public at the Livingston County Fairgrounds. More specifics will follow.
I-24 Day Work Zone in Lyon, Caldwell & Trigg Counties This work zone along I-24 from the 51mm to the 58mm is to allow the installation of traffic striping designed for concrete pavement along the eastbound and westbound lanes. Once the section from the 51mm to 58mm is completed, the contractor will be working from the 58mm to 64mm for the same process.
U.S. 45/Fulton Rd Paving in Mayfield on Wednesday (New) Watch for paving along U.S. 45/Fulton Road southwest of downtown Mayfield on Wednesday, Nov. 8, from near the KY 80/I-69 Ramp at 14.946mm extending north to 15.073mm near the Red Duck Creek Culvert. The contractor anticipates the project will be completed in one day.
KY 348 Paving in Graves Co. starts Nov. 8 (NEW) Paving along KY 348/Hardmoney-Symsonia Road in NE Graves County runs from the Graves-McCracken County Line at 0.0mm, extending SE through the KY 450/Oaks Road intersection to the KY 131 intersection in Symsonia at the 2.87mm. This is a 3-day project.
U.S. 68/KY 80 Work Zone in Land Between the Lakes (NEW) An eastbound daytime work zone lane restriction between U.S. 68/KY 80 Trigg County mile point 0.0 and the 5-mile marker is to allow roadside mechanized brush cutting. This is along U.S. 68/KY 80 between Eggners Ferry Bridge and the Golden Pond area of Land Between the Lakes. The work zone will be up along about a one-mile section with the location moving eastward as the work progresses over about the next week. All traffic will move to the left-hand or passing lane in this work zone. Once work is completed along the eastbound lanes, the crew will move to the westbound lanes at Golden Pond and work their way back to Eggners Ferry Bridge.
KY 464 Day Closures in Calloway County Nov. 6, 8 & 9 (NEW) KY 464/Almo-Shilo Road in Calloway County will close during daylight hours on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, November 6, 8, and 9, 2023. These daytime closures at the13.2mm immediately east of Almo Community will allow a long-reach trackhoe to remove accumulated debris at the Clarks River Bridge. Closures will run from 8 a.m., to 2:30 p.m., each day. The crew will not work at this site on Tuesday, Nov. 7, so as to avoid blocking the roadway on election day.
Purchase Parkway/U.S. 51 Fulton Exit 1 Closed All ramps at the Purchase Pkwy/U.S. 51 Fulton Exit 1 interchange are closed for reconstruction until about Dec. 15. There are marked detours for parkway access at KY 307 Fulton Exit 2 and via U.S. 45 near the KY-TN State Line. Be alert for construction all along the Purchase Parkway for upgrades that could allow it to be designated part of I-69 by sometime late next year.
KY 408 Closed East of Benton KY 408/Egners Ferry Road is closed for approximately 22 months immediately east of Benton. The project between KY 1462/Benton-Birmingham Road and KY 1897/Olive-Hamlet Road includes construction of 4 bridges over Johns River and Clarks River. There is a marked detour via U.S. 68 and KY 1462/Benton-Birmingham Road adds 2.2 miles or about 4 minutes of travel time. The target completion date is August 15, 2025.
KY 120 Extended Closure at Crittenden-Webster Co. Line An extended closure of KY 120/Marion-Providence Road at the Crittenden-Webster County Line is to allow construction of a new Tradewater River Slough Overflow Bridge. It is expected to remain closed for 3 months. There is a marked detour for trucks via KY 109 and U.S. 60 through Sullivan that adds about 8 miles or 10 minutes to a trip between Marion and Providence. NO TRUCKS signage has been placed on nearby county roads with enhanced enforcement presence. Target completion date is Jan. 26, 2024.
U.S. 641 New 4-Lane is Open in Southern Calloway County New U.S. 641 is open between Murray and the state line at Hazel. Work on final tie-ins to the old alignment will continue for a few weeks. Please be sure to download updates for your GPS units and phone map apps. KYTC has added additional directional signage. Watch for 2-way traffic at the Murray end of the project as bridge connections are being completed.
KY 795/Scale Rd in Marshall County KY 795/Scale Rd is restricted to one lane with alternating flow controlled by an automated signal to allow a deck overlay and maintenance on the Ellender Creek Bridge at mile point 6.026. The work is expected to take several weeks to complete.
Annual "Antler Alert" Continues through December About half of all deer-related crashes occur during the last three months of the year, with November having the most. Deer mating season and the fall harvest put deer on the move. In addition to causing vehicle damage, deer can be hazardous to humans, contributing to about 200 deaths nationwide each year. Of the 12 counties in KYTC District 1, five were in the top 30 for deer crashes statewide. Extra caution is advised. Please see our Oct. 16, posting at www.Facebook.com/KYTCDistrict1 for more info.
KY 166/Middle Rd Closed in Fulton County KY 166/Middle Road in Fulton County is closed at the 2mm for construction of a new bridge over Mud Creek. This is along KY 166 about halfway between KY 116 and KY 1127. There will be a marked detour via KY 239, KY 94 and KY 125. The target completion date is Dec. 22, 2023.
U.S. 45 Traffic Signal Work in Mayfield Work continues at intersections around the Court Square in Mayfield to restore traffic signals taken out by the Dec. 2021, tornado. Be alert for intersection closures from time to time in downtown Mayfield due to open excavations to place conduit for electrical connections. Motorists should self-detour via side streets. Trucks should seek an approved state route based on load weight. .
KY 945 Closed at Gilbert Creek Culvert in Graves County KY 945 remains closed at the 1.14mm in Graves County at the Gilbert Creek Culvert due to erosion damage from flash flooding in July. KYTC engineers are working on plans to replace the damaged concrete culvert with a new bridge. There is no start date at this time.
Dorena-Hickman Ferry Closed The Dorena-Hickman Ferry is closed due to low water on the Mississippi River. Water levels on the Mississippi River have dropped below the bottom of the landing ramp in Hickman Harbor. The Ferry is expected to remain closed until substantial rainfall moves water levels above about 12.5 ft on the Cairo gauge. Purchase Parkway/KY 339 Wingo Exit 14 Reopened All ramps at the KY 339 Wingo Exit 14 interchange are open. Work zone lane restrictions remain up along the parkway from about the 15 to 17.5mm with an 11 ft. maximum load width. There is a 55 mph work zone speed limit with a 45 mph speed limit at some locations and an enhanced police presence where construction crews are present. The target completion date for all work on the project to extend I-69 southward along the parkway is Dec 15, 2024.
KY 1286/N. Friendship Road to Open in McCracken County A section of KY 1286/North Friendship Road in the Lone Oak area between U.S. 45 and U.S. 62 is open - a full year ahead of schedule. Motorists should be aware of changes in traffic flow the new section will create. Access to North Friendship from U.S. 45 is via the Lakeview Drive intersection. The enhanced roadway has curbs, gutters, a center turn lane, and a multi-use trail.
KY 129 in Southern Graves County Be alert for a work zone along KY 129 from the KY 94 intersection at mile point 8.735, extending northward through the KY 2422 intersection to KY 339 at mile point 15.4, a distance of 6.67 miles. Due to narrow pavement, this work zone has an 8 ft. load width restriction. Motorists should be alert for one-lane traffic with alternating flow controlled by flaggers. The project is about 25 percent complete. Nov 15 is the target completion date.
U.S. 60/U.S. 62 Mississippi River Bridge Between IL & MO CLOSED The U.S. 60/U.S. 62 Mississippi River Bridge that connects Illinois and Missouri near Cairo is closed until Oct. 2024, for a maintenance and repair project. For vehicles crossing the U.S. 51 Ohio River "Cairo" Bridge from Kentucky into Illinois traveling into Missouri this creates about a 4 mile (5 min.) detour via U.S. 51 through Cairo to take I-57 South to cross the I-57 Mississippi River Bridge into Missouri.
