Traffic Signal Changes for Overnight Hours along U.S. 45-Business/Kentucky Ave in Paducah

Signal phasing changes at 6 intersections start tonight

PADUCAH, Ky. (Sept. 8, 2023)  The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans traffic signal operational changes during the overnight hours for a section of U.S. 45-Business/Kentucky Avenue in Paducah starting Friday, September 8, 2023.

A recent engineering study of traffic along U.S. 45-Business/Kentucky Avenue found low overnight traffic numbers would allow additional signals to be placed in RED FLASHING mode.

Intersections along U.S. 45-Business/Kentucky Avenue where traffic signals will be placed in RED FLASHING mode include South 6th Street, South 7th Street, South 9th Street, Walter Jetton Boulevard (10th St), South 21st Street, and South 25th Street.  These intersections along U.S. 45-Business/Kentucky Avenue in Paducah will become ALL-WAY STOPS between 11 p.m., and 4 a.m., each day.

Traffic signals at Kentucky Avenue intersections with South 21st Street, South 16th Street, and South 13th Street have been in RED FLASHING mode with ALL-WAY STOPS during overnight hours since October 3, 2022.

A study of traffic flow along U.S. 45-Business/Kentucky Avenue found the traffic count for all legs of these intersections is about the same during the overnight hours.  Changing the signals at these locations to Red Flashing mode to denote an ALL-WAY STOP will enhance overnight traffic flow.

Motorists should be alert to changes in traffic flow this signal operational change will bring to these intersections during the overnight hours.

Approximately 5,000 vehicles travel this section of U.S. 45-Business/Kentucky Avenue in an average day.  Traffic count numbers are substantially lower during the overnight hours.
