Transportation Study Wrapping Up For Glendale Area
Public Input Needed with Survey Period Until Sept. 8th
ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (Aug. 18, 2023) – A nearly year-long planning study is approaching completion, looking into the area surrounding Glendale and the Blue Oval-SK industrial site. The Glendale Mobility Study assesses current transportation conditions and provides concepts to improve safety and mobility in the vicinity based on expected traffic volumes in the future. In all, four concepts were sketched and presented last November with a series of public meetings, stakeholder meetings and surveys for feedback.
One of those four potential needs identified in the defined study area is a northwest bypass of downtown Glendale. Dating back to a Metropolitan Planning Organization study released in 2008, the idea connects KY 222 to KY 1136. Earlier this year, historians took at closer look at the Glendale Historic District boundary and its possible expansion north. At the initial stage of the Glendale Mobility Study a year ago, constraints involving agricultural and historic properties resulted in the northwest bypass concept being labeled as "not feasible," and was presented as such to the general public and local stakeholders. The reason involves an expanded boundary proposed in 2005. Initial concepts of the Glendale Mobility Study accounted for this expanded boundary. The proposed boundary did not become finalized. A newly updated survey recommended a smaller boundary expansion and the State Historic Preservation Office concurred. Given this condition, an opportunity becomes feasible for a northwest bypass option. The new information was presented to local stakeholders earlier this week so they are aware and able to field questions from local citizens and is now ready for public display and feedback.
Display materials and an official survey are now live on the Glendale Mobility Study website: www.glendalestudy.com
The website still has original materials and formation from last year’s presentation for review and has been updated to reflect the most current information regarding the northwest bypass option. One of these updates combines the northeast and northwest options into one (labeled as AB on the website). This is a result of the opportunity on the northwest portion of Glendale potentially creating a continuous KY 222 Bypass, combined with considerations for improvements and evaluations following the train derailment incident from earlier this year.
We encourage input by visiting the website and providing input through the survey. Anyone with additional questions is welcome to contact the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District Office in Elizabethtown at 270-766-5066. The survey will close on September 8th. Previously obtained feedback from in-person and online sources along with responses from the current survey period will be used to finalize the study this fall with the goal of prioritizing concepts to move forward toward design.
