UPDATE:  Closure of KY 305/Cairo Road and KY 998/Olivet Church Road West of I-24 Paducah Exit 3 Continues Through April 8

Work zone traffic shift planned for 6 a.m., Monday, March 20

PADUCAH, Ky. (March 15, 2023) — KY 305/Cairo Road and KY 998/Olivet Church Road remain closed just west of Interstate 24 Paducah Exit 3 to allow asphalt pavement in the intersection to be replaced with concrete.

As part of that ongoing work, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans a change in traffic configuration to allow for additional demolition of old pavement in the intersection while maintaining access to nearby businesses.

Motorists seeking to access businesses on the west side of the I-24 Exit 3 interchange will encounter the following key changes Monday morning:

  • KY 305 westbound traffic seeking access to the Pilot Truck Stop, Minit Mart, or R&L Truck Terminal will be shifted to the left with a right turn only
  • Customers of the Pilot Truck Stop, Minit Mart, or R&L Truck Terminal will exit straight south onto KY 998/Olivet Church Road southbound to return to I-24 via the U.S. 60 Paducah Exit 4 Interchange
  • Customers of the Pilot Truck Stop, Minit Mart, or R&L Truck Terminal will no longer be able to make a left turn onto KY 305 to return to the I-24 Exit 3 Interchange or to KY 305 eastbound
  • KY 305 westbound traffic will be prohibited from making U-Turns at the traffic signal at the KY 998/Olivet Church Road intersection
  • KY 305 westbound traffic will have no left turn to KY 998/Olivet Church Road South at the intersection
  • Eastbound KY 305/Cairo Road will remain closed to through traffic at the KY 998/Olivet Church Road intersection.
  • KY 998/Olivet Church Road remains closed to through traffic at the KY 305/Cairo Road intersection

The transition to this traffic configuration is scheduled promptly at 6 a.m., CDT, on Monday, March 20.  The KYTC McCracken County Highway Maintenance Crew will immediately start demolition of old pavement in the KY 305/KY 998 intersection.

Again, KY 305/Cairo Road and KY 998/Olivet Church Road remain closed to through traffic at the intersection.  However, traffic access is maintained to businesses around the intersection.  Access to Cigarettes Plus and Baymont Inn is from KY 998/Olivet Church Road at Commerce Drive.

This is Phase II of an extended project that will replace about a half-mile of waffled asphalt pavement along KY 305/Cairo Road through the I-24 Paducah Exit 3 interchange. Using concrete in this heavily traveled area will provide better long-term pavement durability where commercial trucks brake, accelerate, and make turns at intersections.

To accommodate the work, KYTC District 1 engineers are asking commuters who regularly travel KY 305 through the Exit 3 interchange to seek alternate routes through about April 8.  Portable message boards have been placed along Interstate 24 to alert motorists to the closures.  Motorists and truckers who seek to access points west and south of the KY 305/KY 998 intersection are asked to self-detour via U.S. 60 Paducah Exit 4.

Once this initial round of concrete work in the KY 305/KY 998 intersection is completed, traffic will temporarily return to normal during the American Quilters Society “Quilt Show Week.”  Following the quilt show, work will resume with traffic shifted from time to time to maintain near-normal traffic flow along KY 305 through the interchange.

Approximately 9,000 vehicles travel KY 305 through the I-24 Exit 3 Interchange in an average day.  That includes a substantial number of commercial trucks.

KYTC District 1 will provide frequent updates as the concrete project continues through the summer.  Motorists should be alert for message boards providing specific traffic information at the interchange.

KYTC crews will handle demolition and excavation of the old pavement on the $3 million project, with Harper Construction Co. handling the reconstruction portion of the work under a master agreement.
