Traffic Alert: High Water Affecting State Highways in NE Kentucky
Heed warning signs; please do not drive thru high water
FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (Feb. 16, 2023) – Crews throughout Kentucky Department of Highways District 9 in northeast Kentucky are responding to heavy rain and flooding today. As of 3 p.m., high water is affecting or blocking travel lanes on these state highways, mostly in the usual low-lying areas:
BOYD COUNTY
- KY 5 at mile markers 2-3 (Naples) and 8-9 (Ironville-Hoods Creek)
- KY 538, Shopes Creek Road, at mile markers 1 to 2 near Hickory Hills
- KY 168, Valley View, at Unity, mile markers 2 to 3
- KY 854 at Rush, mile markers 1 to 2
CARTER COUNTY
- KY 1 in the Beech Grove area north of Hitchins, mile markers 8 to 9
- KY 2 along Buffalo Creek near KY 182, mile markers 10 to 11
- KY 854 (mile marker 1) at KY 1654 in Rush
ELLIOTT COUNTY
- KY 409, Bruin Road, mile markers 6 to 7 along Ison Creek
- KY 1612, Brushy Creek, near Elliott-Carter line, mile markers 0-1
- KY 719, Middle Fork, mile markers 6 to 7 at Roscoe south of Sandy Hook
- KY 1208, Left Fork of Middle Fork, mile markers 0 to 1
LEWIS COUNTY
- KY 989, Salt Lick Road, at Burtonville (mile marker 1) and Toller Branch (mile marker 7). Also, water could rise on KY 989 near the AA Highway intersection.
Motorists are reminded to heed all warning signs, and never drive through high water. It only takes a few inches of water to float a car. And, roadways could be damaged under floodwaters.
In addition, use caution as crews are out cleaning debris and ditchlines. Water could be ponding on travel lanes where debris has caused ditches to overflow.
