Closure of KY 305/Cairo Road and KY 998/Olivet Church Road West of I-24 Paducah Exit 3 Interchange to start Monday, March 6
Closures to last 28 days with additional work continuing through the summer
PADUCAH, Ky. (Feb. 28, 2023) — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to begin replacing waffled asphalt pavement along KY 305 through the Interstate 24 Paducah Exit 3 Interchange starting Monday, March 6, 2023.
This extended project will replace about a half-mile of asphalt pavement with a 10-inch-deep layer of concrete from the I-24 westbound entry/exit ramps extending westward along KY 305 through the KY 998/Olivet Church Road intersection. Using concrete in this heavily traveled area will better withstand the daily wear and tear as heavy vehicles brake and accelerate at intersections.
To accommodate the work, KY 305/Cairo Road and KY 998/Olivet Church Road will be closed just west of Exit 3 during the initial round of construction.
KYTC District 1 Chief Engineer Kyle Poat is asking commuters who regularly travel through the Exit 3 interchange to be prepared to detour.
“Cairo Road and Olivet Church Road will be closed at the west end of the project for about 28 days,” Poat said. “While this will temporarily impact drivers who regularly travel to and from the west through the interchange, it’s necessary if we’re to maintain access to businesses immediately at Exit 3.”
During the initial round of work, there will be no westbound access to KY 305 and no southbound access to KY 998 from I-24 at Exit 3.
The project will be completed in five phases. Phase I will close KY 305 to all traffic at mile point 8.348 immediately west of the KY 998 intersection. KY 998/Olivet Church Road will be closed at mile point 4.048 immediately at the KY 305 intersection. This will allow access to businesses around the interchange, with trucks and motorists heading west on KY 305 detouring via I-24 Exit 4 and U.S. 60.
Once this initial round of concrete work is completed, traffic will temporarily return to normal during the American Quilters Society “Quilt Show Week.” Following the quilt show, work will resume with traffic shifted from time to time to maintain near-normal traffic flow along KY 305 at the interchange.
“Asphalt pavement along KY 305 has become waffled due to substantial truck traffic. Replacing it with concrete is a long-term solution to the pavement problems that have plagued KY 305 in this area,” Poat said.
Approximately 9,000 vehicles travel KY 305 through the I-24 Exit 3 Interchange in an average day. That includes a substantial number of commercial trucks.
KYTC District 1 will provide frequent updates as the concrete project continues through the summer. Motorists should be alert for message boards providing specific traffic information at the interchange.
KYTC crews will handle demolition and excavation of the old pavement on the $3 million project, with Harper Construction Co. handling the reconstruction portion of the work under a master agreement.
