Traffic Advisory: One-Lane Traffic with Temporary Signals on US 60 in Boyd County

Part of $45 million widening, reconstruction project

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (Feb. 7, 2023) – Motorists should plan for temporary traffic signals on US 60 in Boyd County this week as construction continues on the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s highway widening project between Coalton and Cannonsburg.

Beginning Thursday, Feb. 9, contractors will reduce US 60 to one lane near Joe Wells Road (concrete plant entrance at milepoint 3.1) for water line relocation work. A temporary traffic signal will be used from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to reroute all traffic into one lane past the work area.

If construction is not completed Thursday, then work and traffic impacts will also occur on Friday.

The US 60 widening project between Coalton and Cannonsburg requires this and other traffic pattern changes this winter, including:

  • All US 60 traffic has shifted to new pavement east of I-64 at Coalton, from the BP station to Princeland Estates. Eastbound traffic coming from the interstate is diverted right into new travel lanes. Westbound traffic coming from Cannonsburg is diverted left just past Princeland.
  • All KY 5 traffic is detoured slightly west using Princess Drive and a temporary US 60 intersection while the existing intersection is closed for reconstruction. Motorists should use caution as the temporary KY 5-US 60 intersection will be smaller and lack turn lanes.
  • Princeland Drive is closed at US 60 at Princess. All traffic is detoured using Princess Drive/Kelly Drive. (All traffic from Princeland Heights, West Woods Court, Ross Court, and Princess Drive must use Princess Drive to reroute across the new bridge over Williams Creek to access US 60 at the temporary KY 5 intersection.)

In addition, expect narrow travel lanes and speed limit changes, as well as lane shifts and width restrictions on US 60 during construction. Large commercial vehicles or those over 11 feet wide should detour using KY 180 and I-64 at Cannonsburg (Exit 185). Please use caution and watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the highway, and intermittent flagged traffic.

IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

The construction is part of the Transportation Cabinet’s $45.7 million upgrade of US 60 that will transform four miles of the old, narrow road between I-64 at Coalton and the KY 180 intersection at Cannonsburg into a straighter, three-lane-style highway.

Improvements include two wider thru-traffic lanes, center and right-turn lanes, and paved shoulders as well as better KY 5 and KY 180 intersections, and replacement of three aging bridges.

Once complete, the project will improve safety, relieve traffic congestion, and enhance regional connectivity along the heavily traveled route, which feeds 12,000 vehicles a day into downtown Ashland as well as to and from shopping centers, the local landfill, and the Paul Coffey Industrial Park.
