Construction Started on KY 994/Old Mayfield Rd Bottom Ditch Bridge in Southern McCracken County

Target completion date is December 15

PADUCAH, Ky. (September 22, 2022)  A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) started construction on a new Bottom Ditch Bridge along KY 994/Old Mayfield Road in southern McCracken County this week.

KY 994/Old Mayfield Road has been closed since May 24 at mile point 2.531, when KYTC bridge inspectors found there had been further deterioration of the bridge support structure due to overweight trucks.  The Bottom Ditch Bridge had previously been reduced to a 10-ton load limit in June of 2021 due to substructure damage.

KYTC District 1 engineers conducted an extensive examination of the bridge substructure and determined it could not be repaired.  This bridge is along KY 994 just south of the KY 1288/Lebanon Church Road intersection.  Bottom Ditch is sometimes referred to as the Blizzard Pond Drainage Canal.

Since the roadway was already closed, the contractor was able to start work immediately.  The old bridge has already been removed and prep work has started on construction of a new bridge structure.

Jim Smith Contracting of Grand Rivers is the prime contractor on this $616,864 bridge replacement project.  The target completion date is December 15, 2022.

There is no marked detour.  However, motorists may continue to self-detour via KY 348/Hardmoney Road, KY 1014/Houser Road, and KY 1288/Lebanon Church Road.

KYTC District 1 will attempt to provide timely updates as work on the new bridge progresses.
