KYTC District 1 Sends Crew to Assist Eastern Kentucky Food Recovery Effort

Caravan departed this morning for week long deployment

PADUCAH, Ky. (August 29, 2022)   Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 1 is sending an additional crew to assist with flood recovery efforts in Perry, Letcher, and Pike counties of Eastern Kentucky.

The 12-member crew, made up of personnel from Crittenden, Livingston, and Lyon county, as well as three members of the Smithland Section Office engineering staff, headed out this morning.

Oddly, the crew will not be repairing highways.   The crew will mainly be focused installation of water and wastewater lines at Whitesburg and Hazard.

Following the tornado that devastated parts of our region in December, District 1 crews initially jumped in to clear debris from roadways,  They then quickly transitioned into constructing pads for campers to provide emergency housing.  As a result, District 1 crews have honed some skills that are useful in the restoration of flood-ravaged areas in Eastern Kentucky.

The crew rolled out of the District 1 Lyon County facility around 10 a.m., today, with trucks loaded with supplies for what will be about an 8 hour caravan to Pikeville.  The crew will spend the week helping with flood recovery efforts before returning home late on September 2.

On a trip to Eastern Kentucky earlier this month, another KYTC District 1 crew constructed water lines and gravel pads for installation of a camper community to provide housing for displaced families in Whitesburg, Hazard, and Jenkins.
