Temporary lane, road closures scheduled in NE Kentucky counties
FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (Aug. 19, 2022) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reminds motorists to watch for lane closures, delays, and traffic changes across the Commonwealth this week and throughout the summer construction season.
In addition to providing real-time traffic information online at GoKY.ky.gov or via Waze on your smartphone, the Kentucky Department of Highways District 9 updates road work on social media at Facebook.com/KYTCDistrict9 and at Twitter.com/KYTCDistrict9.
The following major work zones and traffic changes on state highways in northeast Kentucky are being reported for the Aug. 22-26 work week:
BATH COUNTY
-
KY 36: Sign installation and other final work for KY 36 resurfacing from downtown Owingsville to KY 3290-Mudlick Road. Traffic impacts should be minimal, but watch for intermittent flagged traffic.
BOYD COUNTY
-
I-64: Paving on I-64 between the Cannonsburg and Catlettsburg exits (mile markers 184 to 191), with one-lane traffic each direction and traffic shifts. Approaching the work zone, merge left as the right lane is closed. Where indicated, on-ramps are being paved and there are narrow traffic lanes. Use caution and be prepared to stop. Traffic entering the interstate must yield to oncoming traffic. Speed limit is 55 miles per hour. Watch for trucks entering and leaving the roadway.
-
US 60 (Coalton to Cannonsburg): Road reconstruction taking place on 4 miles of US 60 between I-64 at Coalton and the Cannonsburg intersection. Traffic has been shifted to new pavement in some areas. Watch for intermittent flagged traffic, narrow travel lanes, and speed limit changes. Minor blasting is taking place near Princess noon to 3 p.m. daily as needed. Expect delays.
-
KY 3294 (Cannonsburg Road): Resurfacing project between KY 538 and US 23, and through downtown Catlettsburg. Watch for one-lane traffic controlled by flaggers, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Sidewalk work ongoing in downtown Catlettsburg on KY 3294, with paving set for later.
-
US 60 (Catlettsburg-Kenova Bridge): Contractors could return this week to finish painting steel support beams underneath the Billy C. Clark (US 60) Bridge. When work restarts, all bridge traffic between Catlettsburg and Kenova will again be controlled by temporary signals, with one lane crossing at a time. Expect delays.
-
KY 168 (S. Belmont St.) in Ashland: Beginning Monday, Aug. 22, crews will close South Belmont between Thornwell Road and West Grove Street right near KY 1012 – approximately in front of 2701 S. Belmont St. – to repair pavement. Road will remain closed until work is complete. Detour via KY 1012 (Boy Scout), US 60, and Blackburn Avenue (KY 168) or other local routes.
CARTER COUNTY
-
KY 7/KY 1 (Carol Malone Boulevard): A widening project along 1.5 miles of KY 7/KY 1 at downtown Grayson has all traffic shifted into a new three-lane configuration – one lane each direction with a center turn lane. Approaching the work zone, traffic will merge into a single thru lane between Academic Parkway and the Little Sandy River. Side streets and entrances along south side of highway could be closed at times. Use caution. Speed limit reduced to 25 miles per hour.
-
KY 1/KY 773 at Hitchins: Culvert replacement work underneath the Hitchins intersection is mostly complete. Contractors are working to remove temporary detours and put KY 1 and KY 773 back into its permanent configuration. A new, permanent four-way traffic stop is in place, and will remain in place after construction to improve traffic flow. Use caution, and observe the new stop signs.
-
US 60 East of Grayson: Ditching, culvert, shoulder work, and pavement repairs ongoing along five miles of US 60 east in Carter County from Wilson Creek Road (milepoint 30) to the Boyd-Carter county line (milepoint 34.8) near the I-64 interchange at Coalton. Watch for one-lane, flagged traffic in work areas through fall.
MASON COUNTY
-
US 68: Work has resumed on US 68 improvement project in Mason County. Paving, repairs from the Fleming County line (milepoint 0) to just past Ross Drive (milepoint 6). Expect lane closures with flagged traffic for the next few weeks.
-

Barricades at Clift Pike and Key Pike, with only local traffic permitted past up to the work site. The road will reopen overnight, but traffic will be restricted to one lane controlled by temporary traffic signals. Traffic can use KY 324 and KY 11 to detour.
-
KY 10 at Kennedy Creek Road: Contractor will begin land clearing for bridge project near Maysville. Possible lane closure during working hours. Use caution, expect delays.
NICHOLAS COUNTY
-
KY 386 (Carpenter Road): Beginning Monday, Aug. 22, and continuing 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each weekday for the next two to three weeks, KY 386 will be closed about a half mile west of KY 13 (milepoint 0.5) for embankment repairs. Barricades will be placed on KY 386 at Pleasant Springs Road and KY 13, with local traffic only permitted up to the work site. Thru traffic may use KY 13, KY 36, and US 68 to navigate around the closure.
ROWAN COUNTY
-
KY 32 (near I-64): A private contractor is working on KY 32 westbound (outbound from Morehead) at the Kroger shopping center intersection. Lane closures, flagged traffic possible.
Motorists should also watch for lane closures and flagged traffic where crews are performing daily maintenance activities such as paint striping, pothole patching, ditching, mowing, and other roadway repairs in District 9’s service area of Bath, Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Fleming, Greenup, Lewis, Mason, Nicholas and Rowan counties.
Road work schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
