I-71 Resurfacing Project Begins

This Week in Jefferson County

The project will include work on the I-264 interchange ramps

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Aug. 2, 2022) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) announces an asphalt resurfacing project for Interstate 71 starting this week in Jefferson County. The construction will include working on the ditches, shoulders, guardrails and lighting in addition to milling and paving the interstate.

Nightly lane closures and delays are possible between Interstate 265 (Gene Snyder Freeway) at mile marker 9 and the bridge over Blankenbaker Lane at mile marker 3.7. As the project progresses, contractors will be working on the I-71 South ramp to Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway) West and the I-264 East ramp to I-71 North.

The construction will also include a 10-day closure of I-71 South between I-265 and Blankenbaker Lane. The closure is required for more extensive repairs to the base of the road in that section. Traffic signs and electronic message boards will be posted well in advance of the closure with an alternate route. The suggested detour will be I-265 South to Interstate 64 West toward Louisville. The dates of the I-71 South closure will be determined based on the progression of the work but are anticipated later this month or early September.

Louisville Paving Co. was awarded a $7.6 million contract on June 7 for this asphalt pavement and roadway rehabilitation project. The project is scheduled to be completed this fall, except for some work on the interstate bridges within the project.

The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
