US 23 to East I-64 Traffic in Boyd County Must Seek Alternate Routes This Week

For on ramp rebuild; detour via I-64 west to turn around at Exit 185

CATLETTSBURG, Ky. (Aug. 1, 2022) – Interstate commuters traveling to Huntington, W.Va., or points east from Boyd County will need to seek alternate routes this week as contractors rebuild the US 23 to eastbound I-64 on ramp at Catlettsburg.

Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 2, and continuing through Saturday, Aug. 6, contractors will close the on ramp, and US 23 traffic will not be able to access I-64 going toward West Virginia during construction.

Suggested detour routes to access eastbound I-64 include:

  • From US 23 in southern Boyd County, take I-64 west to Cannonsburg (Exit 185) and turnaround to take eastbound I-64 toward West Virginia. With Kenova bridge construction, this could be your fastest option.
  • From the Ashland area, use either US 52 through Ohio to Huntington or US 60 and KY 180 to I-64 at Cannonsburg.
  • At Catlettsburg, motorists can detour using US 60 through Kenova, W.Va. However, please note that the Catlettsburg-Kenova bridge remains one lane with temporary signals for a painting project. Significant delays are likely.

The on ramp closure is necessary for widening and paving to extend the ramp, which will improve safety by allowing more room for drivers to accelerate and merge with I-64 traffic.

It is possible the on ramp could reopen early. However, motorists should plan for detours or seek alternate routes Tuesday through Saturday, Aug. 2-6.

Electronic message boards on US 23 will alert the public of the planned closure and provide schedule updates in case of inclement weather.

The construction is part of an overall $9.5 million project to improve I-64 in Boyd County, which includes new blacktop for all travel lanes, widening of the Catlettsburg on ramp, and roadside, drainage, pavement, and concrete repairs. Contractors have until Nov. 30 to complete the project.

Currently, I-64 is one lane each direction between the Cannonsburg and Catlettsburg exits (mile markers 184 to 191) and the speed limit has been reduced to 55 miles per hour. The right lane is closed entering the work zone, so all traffic must merge left. On ramp traffic entering I-64 must yield to oncoming interstate traffic.

Please heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
