Traffic Change Planned This Week on Carol Malone Boulevard Widening in Grayson

All traffic, construction will switch sides on KY 7/KY 1 downtown
Part of $6 million project to enhance traffic flow, safety

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (July 6, 2022) – All traffic and road construction will switch sides this week on Carol Malone Boulevard (KY 7/KY 1) at downtown Grayson as contractors continue work on the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s $6 million highway widening project.

Today through Thursday, motorists should watch for flaggers and prepare for unexpected traffic flow changes as contractors pave the construction area on the northbound side of Carol Malone Boulevard.

On Thursday evening, or by Friday, all traffic will be switched to that northbound side – again, in a three-lane configuration with one lane each direction and a center turn lane – so construction can begin on the southbound side of the highway.

Basically, the overall format of the work zone stays the same, but traffic and construction will switch sides by Friday:

  • Traveling south on KY 7/KY 1 from I-64 toward downtown Grayson, two lanes of traffic will merge left into one lane. A center turn lane will be available for left turns at intersections and entrances.
  • Traveling north on KY 7/KY 1 from Grayson lake toward downtown Grayson, two lanes of traffic will shift right into one lane (left lane closed.) A center turn lane will be available for left turns at intersections and entrances.

In case of inclement weather or other issues, the exact timing of the traffic pattern change could be delayed. Heed all warning signs, and please use caution.

The speed limit remains reduced to 25 miles per hour in the work zone. Due to heavy traffic volumes, especially during school and business rush hours, significant traffic delays are likely. Seek alternate routes if possible.

The Carol Malone Boulevard widening project began in April 2021 and is taking place in a 1.5-mile work zone along the four-lane highway from Academic Parkway to the Little Sandy River bridge in Grayson.

The boulevard, which carries KY 7 and KY 1 traffic through downtown Grayson, is an important I-64 connector in Carter County that serves as many as 17,000 vehicles per day. A project to improve its traffic flow began more than 15 years ago.

Work under way now will provide wider travel lanes, improved turning lanes – including an upgraded US 60 (Main Street) intersection with dedicated right and left turn lanes and two through lanes – as well as new sidewalk, curbing, and other work to reduce congestion and to improve traffic flow and safety along the downtown highway.

The project is being done under a $5,976,248 low-bid Transportation Cabinet contract awarded to Mountain Enterprises, Inc.
