Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 2 Traffic Impact Report for June 6 - 12

The District 2 area serves Caldwell, Christian, Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, Hopkins, McLean, Muhlenberg, Ohio, Union, and Webster Counties

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (June 6, 2022) –  KYTC District 2 anticipates the following locations will impact traffic the week of June 6 - 12.

Christian County

  • The closure of Walnut Street (US 41-A) at the Walnut Street Bridge over the CSX railroad will began on Wednesday, May 11. The closure is necessary for the reconstruction of the new bridge. Located in Hopkinsville, the structure is 475 ft. northeast of east 21st. Street. The new structure will have two lanes and a pedestrian sidewalk on the east side of the bridge. The traveling public, including pedestrians, should begin preparing for alternate routes around this location. A signed detour will be in place to assist all motorists, but KYTC wants to emphasize the importance of the detour for commercial truck traffic.  The detour provides state routes that can accommodate such vehicle dimensions. The detour will utilize KY 380 (Skyline Drive) and US 41(9th Street) for access by trucks requiring larger turning radii. The scheduled completion date for this project is fall of 2022.
  • The construction of a turn lane on KY Route 115 at Pembroke Elementary School in Christian County are still in need of corrective work. This work has been completed.

 Hancock County

  • Temporary signals have been installed on US 60 in Hancock County in preparation for northbound slide repair between mile markers 16 - 17. The repairs began on March 23 and is expected to take 5 - 6 weeks, weather permitting.  A soil nail wall project will take place between KY 3199 and the Hancock/Breckinridge County line.
    • Benefits of a soil nail wall compared to the traditional method of placing steel piles include the following:
    • soil nailing is ideal for tight spaces
    • it can be used in irregular shapes
    • there is less impact on surrounding areas
    • requires less work area
    • reduces right-of-way requirements
    • no restrictions on wall height
    • provides permanent drainage, not available with other repair methods
    • District 2 asks that drivers obey the traffic signals and speed limits to prevent any accidents within the work zone.  School buses and emergency vehicles will be accommodated when needed. Soil nailing is a construction measure that reinforces and strengthens existing ground to treat unstable soil slopes. Rebar is installed at a slight downward direction in pre-drilled, closely spaced holes, and grouted into place with concrete. In addition, synthetic strips and perforated drainage pipes are also installed.
    • Drainage is a critical component of the soil nail process. This prevents erosion and damage to the wall from water buildup in the ground. Soil nail walls have a rigid facing of shotcrete and/or soil nail head plates on the surface or a flexible reinforcing mesh held beneath the head plates against the soil face. Rabbit-proof wire mesh and environmental erosion control fabrics may be used with flexible mesh where environmental conditions dictate.

Henderson County

Motorists will be seeing some changes to KY 2084/Jamerson Drive and KY 812/Hallway Drive in Henderson County.

  • Work will be addressed on Hallway Drive/ KY 812 between MP 7.558 and MP 7.99
  • Work will be addressed on Jamerson Drive/KY 2084 between MP 1.938 - MP 2.238
    • Jamerson Drive/KY 2084 will undergo an intersection realignment. The new configuration will accommodate an eastbound lane, a westbound lane, a through lane, and a right turn lane.
    • Hallway Drive / KY 812 will be modified to accommodate an eastbound left turn, a straight lane, and a right turn lane. Pavement markings will be addressed upon these changes. This work is expected to last 4 months.
  • Traffic on U.S. 60 near the Spottsville Bridge in Henderson County continues to be be rerouted along a short temporary diversion that runs adjacent to U.S. 60 and began Monday, Sept. 27. The diversion will contain two lanes to facilitate two-way traffic. This traffic pattern will remain in place into the summer in order to construct the tie-in of the new U.S. 60 alignment with the existing U.S. 60 alignment. Completion is set for late summer/early fall.

Tasks remaining to be addressed for the Spottsville Bridge in Henderson County:

  • Install barrier wall
  • Finish painting the structure
  • Finish approach pavement tie-ins
  • Demolish the old structure once traffic has been switched
  • Scheduled for completion this fall

Hopkins County

  • The first leg of U.S. 41-A /Nebo Road in Madisonville has been completed with the second phase of the project to begin Monday, Dec. 6. The work will include grade, drain, and surfacing efforts.  This work will dovetail into the previous section with same lane configuration. This effort will also include the replacement of the existing railroad bridge. Drivers will see Improvements on U.S. 41-A/Dixie Highway/Nebo Road from Industrial Drive to Yorkwood Place, a distance of 3.30 miles. Crews will begin clearing vegetation from the project area.  Motorists should be aware of flaggers on-site and road closures throughout the project. Seek alternate routes when possible.

Ohio County

  •  The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) notifies motorists of reconstruction in Ohio County at the I-165/KY 69 interchange (mile point 50.1). The project was added to the Recommended Highway Plan in 2018 and will improve the functionality and safety by bringing this interchange up to current interstate standards.
    • Work began on Monday, February 28, to begin the process of implementing a Northbound lane closure in the slow lane on I-165 at the Hartford exit in Ohio County. The closure will begin one mile before and mile after the Hartford interchange. Crews will begin the excavation of the existing ramps. The installation of a signed detour will facilitate the closure for the existing northbound off- ramp onto KY 69.The northbound ramp from KY 69 will remain open.
    • The installation of a signed detour and the closure of the existing northbound ramp to KY 69 was put into place on March 6. Traffic will not be able to exit onto KY 69 if they are traveling northbound on I-165 was . The northbound ramp from KY 69 will remain open. The closure is necessary to construct a box culvert and perform the required grading for the new ramp. The project is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2022.
    • The KY 69 exit ramp on northbound I-165 at Hartford remains closed. The gravel access under the bridge has been blocked off.  Vehicles will no longer be able to make a U-turns onto I-165 at the Hartford interchange. Northbound travelers should detour to the Western Kentucky Parkway westbound to the US 231 Beaver Dam exit. Advance warning message signs and a signed detour is in place. Motorists are asked to reduce their speed and be aware of the changing conditions present in a work zone.
  • Work began on March 2 on the West Kentucky Parkway bridge located at MP 76.77 over I-165 in Ohio County. The work will consist of cleaning and painting the bridge structure as well as replacing the bridge bearings. Motorists can anticipate daily lane restrictions which will be set up and taken down on a  daily basis. The westbound passing lane on the WK parkway will be closed daily at the WK Parkway interchange on/off ramps to I-165.
