Daytime Lane & 8 Ft. Load Width Restriction on U.S. Cumberland River "Smithland" Bridge starting Tuesday, June 7

Traffic restriction to allow detailed inspection of bridge structure

PADUCAH, Ky. (June 3, 2022)  The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans to place a daytime lane and load width restriction on the U.S. 60 Cumberland River Bridge at Smithland starting Tuesday, June 7, 2022.

This lane and 8 ft. maximum load width restriction is to allow a detailed inspection of the bridge structure.  This lane and load width restriction is expected to be in place Tuesday through Thursday from 8 a.m., CDT, to about 3 p.m., each day.

Motorists should be prepared to encounter one-lane traffic with alternating flow controlled by flaggers.  Appropriate caution is required where equipment, flaggers, and inspection personnel are working along the bridge is close proximity to traffic flow.

The 8 ft. load width restriction is required due to the use of a UBIV- Under Bridge Inspection Vehicle placed on the bridge deck to allow inspectors to reach all elements of the bridge structure.  Some minor delays are possible during the movement and placement of equipment to facilitate the inspection.

All Kentucky bridges get a detailed inspection every two years, with long-span lake and river bridges getting an extra walk-through inspection annually.  The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is responsible for inspecting all bridges on public roadways in the Commonwealth.

The U.S. 60 Cumberland River bridge at Smithland, also known as the Lucy Jefferson Lewis Memorial Bridge and the Smithland Bridge, is at U.S. 60 Livingston County mile point 12.348. The 1,817 ft. through truss structure was opened to traffic in 1931. About 5,100 vehicles cross the bridge in an average day.

The bridge is at Cumberland River navigation mile point 2.7.

The 90 year old U.S. 60 Cumberland River Bridge at Smithland is scheduled to be replaced.  Jim Smith Contracting of Grand Rivers is the prime contractor on the $63.6 million project to erect the new 1,912 ft. structure immediately downstream from the existing bridge.  It is expected to be ready for traffic in the summer of 2023.
