Blasting Begins on US 60 Widening Project at Cannonsburg in Boyd County
Daily, non-rush hour blasting possible; expect delays
FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (May 13, 2022) – Blasting will impact traffic along the US 60 widening project west of Cannonsburg in Boyd County in the coming weeks.
Beginning Monday, May 16, contractors will conduct minor blasting for hillside excavation in the Princess area of US 60. The blasting will be limited to non-rush hour times of day – around noon to 3 p.m. when possible – Monday through Friday. Although blasting could be daily at times, it is subject to delay and weather conditions.
When blasting takes place, flaggers will stop all traffic on US 60 for a short period of time. Rolling roadblocks could be encountered. Motorists should plan for delays, or seek alternate routes.
The work is part of the Transportation Cabinet’s $45 million upgrade of US 60 that will transform four miles of the old, narrow road between Cannonsburg and I-64 at Coalton into a straighter, three-lane-style highway with two wider thru-traffic lanes, center turn lanes, right-turn lanes, and paved shoulders.
It also includes replacement of three aging bridges – including one over Williams Creek near Kelly Drive, which has been detoured to Princeland Drive – as well as improvements to the KY 5-US 60 intersection.
Motorists should also watch for speed limit changes, lane changes, construction equipment entering and leaving the highway, and intermittent flagged traffic throughout the project from Coalton to Cannonsburg.
