Maintenance crews patching potholes
throughout District 5 this week
Potholes can form due to extreme cold and precipitation
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Feb. 9, 2022) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists that highway crews are taking advantage of the break in winter weather to patch potholes across the district.
Motorists may encounter District 5 crews performing maintenance work on state roads in Bullitt, Franklin, Henry, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer and Trimble counties. In Jefferson County, crews will be focused on the interstates. The district’s partner, Metro Louisville, is responsible for non-interstate roads in Jefferson County.
Potholes increase due to frigid temperatures and precipitation. Water seeps into roadway cracks. The freezing and thawing cycle then causes the pavement to expand and break apart. Add traffic to the mix, and a small crack can quickly become a pothole.
A cold mix is used to repair potholes during the winter months. Once spring arrives, the potholes are fixed with a hot asphalt mix. The hot mix assists with smoothing out rough spots on the asphalt.
To report a pothole on an interstate in Jefferson County or state roads in the surrounding counties, go to the “contact us” dropdown menu and select “report a hazard” on KYTC’s website http://transportation.ky.gov or click this link: https://bpm.kytc.ky.gov/appbuilder/forms?code=810A005056A2147711773A3B03F6EFEF&Process=PA-DV-ReportAPothole.
To report a pothole on a non-interstate road in Jefferson County, call Metro311, 502-574-5000 or click on this link: https://iframe.publicstuff.com/#?client_id=1000113.
Motorists who encounter work zones should heed any rolling roadblock restrictions, maintain safe following distances and proceed with caution. Signs in the area will notify drivers of the work.
The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
