KYTC District 1 Highway Crews Prepare for Second Round of Winter Precipitation Tonight
Winter mix continues with snow expected after dark tonight
PADUCAH, Ky. (Feb. 2, 2022) – Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 1 Crews are salting and plowing in an effort to get "A" Snow and Ice Priority Routes (Interstates, Parkways & 4-lane U.S. Highways) as clear as possible before another round of winter precipitation rolls through after dark tonight.
Crews spent most of Wednesday night and Friday morning spreading salt as a round of freezing rain and sleet moved through. Crews reported the precipitation transitioned over to sleet more quickly than expected. That has served to help reduce the number of downed trees.
Freezing rain is continuing across parts of Lyon, Marshall, Trigg and Calloway Counties at this hour. The KYTC Lyon County Maintenance Facility is without power. All of these counties report responding to scattered downed trees in the last few hours.
Salt that was spread overnight helped to keep falling sleet slushy enough to provide some traction. Crews are plowing the accumulated ice and sleet off the roadway today, then plan to spread salt to prepare for an additional round of snow and sleet tonight.
KYTC District 1 continues to urge everyone to avoid travel due to the hazardous driving conditions.
