Salt, Plow Trucks Working Snowy Roads in Northeast Kentucky This Morning
Partly- to mostly-covered roads; icy, slick conditions
FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (7:30 AM, Jan. 20, 2022) – Transportation Cabinet salt truck and plow crews are working roads across northeast Kentucky this morning.
As of 7:30 a.m., conditions vary. If you live or drive along the I-64 corridor or south, you’ll see the snowiest, slickest roads. But, with wet or snowy roads in all counties and frigid temps, crews are seeing ice. Motorists should stay home, or use extreme caution.
About 3 to maybe 4 inches of snow came down in Bath, Rowan, Carter, Elliott, Boyd counties, with less in Nicholas and Fleming, then tapered off to 1 inch or a dusting northward to the Ohio River. Main roads are plowing off and becoming passable. Back roads and ridges are still snow covered. Air temps average 23 degrees and falling, and pavement temps are at the freezing mark. Any snow-covered pavement should be considered slick and hazardous. Crews are seeing some freeze-back of wet road or slushy roads. Black ice is likely. If it looks wet, it could be icy.
All main Priority A routes have been treated with salt and plowed. Some Priority B and C routes have been treated depending on the amount of snow in the counties. Salt trucks and plows will keep working roads throughout the day. With the snow over and temps expected to rise to the high 20s this afternoon, crews should make some progress. But, again, air and road temps will remain below freezing, so ice will remain possible all day.
If you must travel, use extreme caution – especially in valleys, at bridges, culverts, and other cold spots – take it slow, leave space between vehicles, and give yourself plenty of time to arrive safely.
