Two bridge projects starting in District 12

Letcher, Knott spans being replaced through Bridging Kentucky program

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 10, 2022) Construction is expected to start this week on two bridges in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s (KYTC) Highway District 12. Both projects – one in Letcher County and one in Knott County – involve replacement of county road bridges.

Following several delays due to COVID and weather impacts, the Letcher County project will replace the existing bridge on CR 1055-80 (Dicks Branch Road) over Rockhouse Creek at the intersection with KY 317. A construction crew is scheduled to mobilize to the site on Tuesday, Jan. 11.

The existing bridge will be closed during construction and traffic will utilize a temporary one-way diversion. The eastbound lane of KY 317 will also be closed during construction.  Temporary traffic signals will be in place on both KY 317 and CR 1055-80 (Dicks Branch Road).

The Knott County bridge project is located on CR 1020 (Dismal Branch Road) bridge over Jones Fork near KY 550 and also has a scheduled start date of Tuesday, Jan. 11. The bridge will be closed during construction and traffic will utilize a temporary onsite diversion.

Construction on both projects will have a traffic impact time of up to 60 days. The new bridges will open to traffic by March 12.

The two bridge replacement projects are part of a 106-bridge design-build Bridging Kentucky contract awarded by KYTC as a joint venture to Central Bridge Company, LLC and Bizzack Construction, LLC, both of Lexington, as well as HDR Engineering. The contract includes a total of 47 bridges in Highway District 12: three in Martin County, five in Floyd, one each in Johnson and Lawrence counties, 14 in Knott, 13 in Letcher, and 10 in Pike County.

The remaining 59 bridges in this contract are in other highway districts. The total amount of the 106-bridge contract is $93,306,747.44.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Bridging Kentucky initiative is a commitment to improving safety and soundness of the Commonwealth’s bridges by rehabilitating, repairing, or replacing critical bridges throughout the state. The program is designed to open closed structures, improve bridge lifespans, ensure appropriate weight capacities are met, and improve access and mobility for all Kentuckians.

Additional information about Bridging Kentucky is available on the program’s website: http://www.BridgingKentucky.com, which provides an overview, a list of frequently asked questions, and the full list of bridges that will be addressed.
