Four New Area R-Cut Installations are Fully Functional

Some minor landscaping and other finish work to continue into fall

PADUCAH, Ky. (Sept. 28, 2021) A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has completed a final round of paving at several Restricted Crossing U-Turn (R-Cut) construction projects in area counties.

All four of the installations are now fully functional with some minor landscaping and other finish work likely to continue into fall.

The R-Cut safety features are at the following locations:

U.S. 45/KY 408 Intersection in Graves County
The U.S. 45/KY 408 intersection is at Graves County U.S. 45 mile point 25.361 and KY 408 mile point 8.047 near the Kentucky State Police Post 1 Headquarters north of Mayfield.

U.S. 45/KY 1288 Intersection in McCracken County
The U.S. 45 intersection with KY 1288/Lebanon Church Road and Lovelaceville-Florence Station Road West is at U.S. 45 McCracken County mile point 2.592 just south of Lone Oak.

U.S. 60/KY 726 Intersection in McCracken County
The U.S. 60/KY 726 intersection is at McCracken County U.S. 60 mile point 3.429 and KY 726/Kelley Road mile marker 5.

U.S. 60/KY 996 Intersection in McCracken County
The U.S. 60/KY 996 intersection is at McCracken County U.S. 60 mile point 3.923 and KY 996/Metropolis Lake Road mile point 3.859.

Motorists are reminded to be aware of changes in traffic flow the R-Cut installations will bring to these intersections.

With previously completed R-Cuts at the U.S. 68/KY 139 intersection near Cadiz and the KY 80 Mayfield South Bypass/Central Road intersection south of Mayfield, KYTC District 1 now has 6 of the safety features with an additional R-Cut under construction at the U.S. 641/KY 402 intersection near Hardin in Marshall County.  Additional R-Cuts are planned along the New U.S. 641 construction corridor between Murray and Hazel in southern Calloway County.

R-Cuts are designed to enhance safety by restricting left turns, then directing traffic to a dedicated turn lane with a modified U-turn.  The safety feature allows drivers to divide the decision-making process to navigate through the intersection into several smaller decisions.  It reduces the 36 identifiable conflict points in a normal intersection to 18 and eliminates traffic movements that create more serious injury crashes.
