UPDATE: New U.S. 62/KY 286 Intersection in West McCracken County is Open
Move to new T intersection completed earlier than expected
PADUCAH, Ky. (Sept. 24, 2021) – A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has successfully moved traffic to the new U.S. 62/KY 286 T intersection in western McCracken County. U.S. 62 opened to traffic at the intersection around Noon, today, moving traffic to the new alignment. Motorists are reminded to be alert for changes in traffic flow the new traffic configuration brings to the intersection.
With the move to the new alignment, eastbound traffic on U.S. 62 is required to stop at the intersection, yield to traffic on KY 286, then turn right to continue eastward. Westbound traffic on U.S. 62 has a dedicated left-turn lane and must yield to oncoming KY 286 traffic to continue westward on U.S. 62. East-West traffic on KY 286 is not required to stop at the intersection.
The U.S. 62/KY 286 Y intersection at Milan Station near the McCracken-Ballard County line is at U.S. 62 McCracken County mile point 3.269 and KY 286 mile point 2.281. Almost 5,000 vehicles travel through the intersection in an average day.
According to KYTC District 1 Engineers, a paint truck arrived at the work zone earlier than expected to add appropriate traffic markings on the new pavement. A crew assigned to erect temporary signage at the site also arrived ahead of schedule, allowing U.S. 62 to open sooner than anticipated. Permanent signage is expected to be installed at the intersection in a few weeks.
Engineers emphasize that the work zone will continue to be active as the contractor adds edge-line rumble strips, finishes shoulder work, installs guardrail, seeds the right-of-way, and completes other finish items. Motorists should be prepared to encounter one-lane traffic with alternating flow controlled by flaggers along this work zone for several more weeks.
Please see work zone map and intersection layout below.
In addition to reconstruction of the intersection, the project includes culvert and shoulder work to enhance safety along 4.5 miles of U.S. 62 between the new KY 286 intersection and the McCracken Boulevard traffic signal.
Weststate Construction, Inc., of Hopkinsville is the prime contractor on this $2.4 million safety project. The target completion date is October 15, 2021.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the contractor will attempt to provide timely updates.
