Work Zone Lane & Load Width Restriction Removed from U.S. 68/KY 80 Lake Barkley Bridge at Canton

Roadway returned to normal traffic flow on completion of bridge inspection

PADUCAH, Ky. (Aug 6, 2021)  The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has completed a detailed inspection of the U.S. 68/KY 80 Lake Barkley Bridge at Canton in Trigg County ahead of schedule.

The early completion of a detailed inspection of the bridge structure at U.S. 68 Trigg County mile point 8.596 allowed the work zone and an 8 ft load width restriction to be removed from the bridge deck this morning.  Traffic flow at the site has returned to normal with all lanes open.

The multi-use trail on the south side of the bridge has also reopened.

All Kentucky bridges get a detailed safety inspection every two years, with long-span river and lake bridges getting an additional walk-through inspection annually.  The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is responsible for inspecting bridges on all public roadways in the commonwealth.

The U.S. 68/KY 80 Cumberland River/Lake Barkley Bridge, also known as the Henry Lawrence Memorial Bridge and the Canton Bridge, carries approximately 5,000 vehicles across Lake Barkley/The Cumberland River in an average day.

The bridge is located at U.S. 68 Trig County mile point 8.596 and serves as the eastern entrance to the Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area.  The bridge is at Cumberland River navigational mile point 63.1.

The New U.S. 68 Lake Barkley Bridge at Canton features a basket handle arch design that matches the design of the U.S. 68 Eggners Ferry Bridge at Aurora. The new $128 million structure opened to traffic on February 12,  2018.
