Work Zone Lane Restriction on U.S. 68/KY 80 Lake Barkley Bridge at Canton starting Monday, Aug 3

Work zone to allow detailed bridge inspection

PADUCAH, Ky. (July 27, 2021)  The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans a work zone lane restriction on the U.S. 68/KY 80 Lake Barkley Bridge at Canton starting Tuesday, August 3, 2021.

This work zone at Trigg County mile point 8.596 is to allow a detailed inspection of the bridge structure.  One lane will remain open in each direction during the inspection process.  There will be an 8 ft load width restriction for westbound traffic due to the use of a UBIV- an under bridge inspection vehicle on the westbound lanes.

The trail walkway on the south side of the bridge will be closed to allow inspectors to climb the bridge structure.

Weather permitting, the inspection team anticipates being on the bridge from approximately 8 a.m., CDT, to about 4 p.m., each day from Tuesday August 3 through Friday, August 6.  If additional time is needed for the inspection the team plans to return on Monday, August 9.

All traffic in this work zone will move to the left-hand or passing lane.  Due to equipment placement on the bridge deck required to facilitate the inspection, the lane restriction will remain up overnight until the inspection is completed.

Motorists should be alert for slowing and merging traffic as they approach this work zone. Some delays are possible during the movement and placement of equipment.

Appropriate caution is required where equipment, flaggers, and inspection personnel are along the roadway in close proximity to traffic flow.

All Kentucky bridges get a detailed safety inspection every two years, with long-span river and lake bridges getting an additional annual walk-through inspection.  The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is responsible for inspecting bridges on all public roadways in the commonwealth.

The U.S. 68/KY 80 Cumberland River/Lake Barkley Bridge, also known as the Henry Lawrence Memorial Bridge and the Canton Bridge, carries approximately 5,000 vehicles across Lake Barkley/The Cumberland River in an average day.

The bridge is located at U.S. 68 Trig County mile point 8.596 and serves as the eastern entrance to the Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area.  The bridge is at Cumberland River navigational mile point 63.1.

The New U.S. 68 Lake Barkley Bridge at Canton features a basket handle arch design that matches the design of the U.S. 68 Eggners Ferry Bridge at Aurora. The new $128 million structure opened to traffic on February 12,  2018.
