Daytime Work Zone on I-24 Tennessee River Bridge starting Monday, July 12

Lane restrictions to allow detailed inspection

PADUCAH, Ky. (July 6, 2021)  A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans a daytime work zone lane restriction on the Interstate 24 Tennessee River Bridge starting Monday, July 12, 2021.

This work zone at I-24 mile point 29.24 is to allow a detailed inspection of the bridge structure.  The inspection crew anticipates this work zone will be active between about 8 a.m., CDT, and 4 p.m., each weekday, on the following work schedule:

  • July 12 & July 13 – I-24 Eastbound traffic moved to the left-hand or passing lane
  • July 14 & July 15 – I-24 Eastbound traffic moved to the right-hand or driving lane
  • July 16 – I-24 Westbound traffic moved to the left-hand or passing lane
  • July 19 – I-24 Westbound traffic moved to the left hand or passing lane
  • July 20 & July 21 –I-24 Westbound traffic moved to the right-hand or driving lane

This schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions or equipment issues.

Appropriate caution is required where equipment, flaggers, and inspection personnel are along the roadway in close proximity to traffic flow.

All Kentucky bridges get a detailed inspection every 2 years with long-span lake and river bridges getting an additional walk-through inspection annually.  KYTC is responsible for inspecting all bridges and overpasses on public roadways in the Commonwealth.

The Interstate 24 Tennessee River Bridge consists of twin tied-arch suspension bridges at I-24 mile point 29.24 at the Marshall-Livingston County Line.

The 2,017 ft. bridges with a  534 ft. main span are also known as the Luther Draffen Bridge.  The bridges opened to traffic in 1974.  The structures carry approximately 30,000 vehicles across the Tennessee River in an average day between U.S. 62 Calvert City Exit 27 and KY 453 Grand Rivers Exit 31.

The bridge is at Tennessee River navigation mile point 21.1, about a mile below Kentucky Dam.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will attempt to provide timely updates should there be substantial changes to this tentative work schedule.  Motorists should be alert and watch for signage indicating the traffic configuration as they approach the work zone each day.
