Deadline Nears for Public Comments on U.S. 60 Project near Kevil in Ballard County

Comments accepted until March 31

PADUCAH, KY (March 22, 2021) – Area citizens have about a week to submit comments on the U.S. 60 reconstruction project near Kevil in Ballard and McCracken Counties. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet held an online public hearing to get public input on the project on March 9.  The deadline for submitting a written statement is March 31, 2021.

So far, 28 citizens have submitted written comments.  The project website at https://arcg.is/CGLa1 contains graphics shared during the online presentation.  A video of the meeting is linked on the site for review by anyone who was unable to attend.

The U.S. 60 corridor project is designed to improve safety and mobility in the Kevil area from the existing 4-lane near the Ballard-McCracken County Line to the Humphrey Creek Bridge at the east edge of LaCenter, a distance of about 4.5 miles.  Approximately 6,000 vehicles travel this section of the existing roadway in an average day.

Several Kevil area residents requested in-person meetings to discuss how the new 4-lane might impact their property. The 4.5 miles of new roadway will require the purchase of 79 parcels.

Statements may be submitted online or via email:

A transcript of submitted comments will be posted to the project website at the conclusion of the comment period. Written comments will be accepted through March 31, 2021, and may be submitted to Project Manager Chris Kuntz at KYTC District 1; 5501 Kentucky Dam Road; Paducah, KY 42003.

In comments during the online public hearing, Kuntz noted funding could become available this summer for property assessments that would allow right-of-way purchases to start this fall. That would put the U.S. 60 project for the Kevil area on track to possibly start construction in 2023.

Once the deadline for comments passes and documentation compiled, the hearing record will be made available for review and copying after an Open Records Request has been received and processed. All Open Records Requests must be emailed to KYTC.OpenRecords@ky.gov or submitted to the KYTC, Office of Legal Services, ATTENTION:  Open Records, 200 Mero Street, Frankfort, Kentucky, 40622.
