Westbound Lane Restriction on I-24 Cumberland River Bridge Delayed Until Tuesday, March 23
Daytime restriction at 33.88mm for detailed bridge inspection
PADUCAH, KY (March. 17, 2021) The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has delayed a westbound daytime work zone lane restriction on the Interstate 24 Cumberland River Bridge planned for Today.
An inspection of the eastbound Cumberland River Bridge at I-24 milepoint 33.88 was completed as scheduled on Tuesday. Due to the weather forecast for today, an inspection of the westbound Cumberland River Bridge has been rescheduled to Tuesday, March 23, 2021.
Westbound motorists should be prepared to encounter a lane restriction on Tuesday with all traffic moved to the left-hand or passing lane.
This work zone is expected to be in place from approximately 8:30 a.m. to about 3:00 p.m., on Tuesday. This inspection work will be weather-dependent.
All Kentucky bridges get a detailed inspection every two years, with long-span river and lake bridges getting an extra walk-through inspection annually.
The Interstate 24 Cumberland River Bridge, which also carries Interstate 69, is a twin continuous plate girder structure that opened to traffic in 1977. Also known as the Ralph Smith Bridge, the 1,731 ft. twin structures with a 420 ft. main span are located at the Livingston-Lyon County Line at I-24 mile point 33.88.
The structures carry almost 30,000 vehicles across the Cumberland River in an average day.
