Railroad crossing replacements on KY 15 in Perry County will cause travel delays Aug. 1-3

Trucks, other large vehicles will need to use an alternate route between Hazard and Whitesburg

JACKSON, KY – The replacement of three railroad crossings on KY 15 in Perry County between Vicco and Jeff will cause delays for drivers beginning Aug. 1.

The CSX Transportation crossings are located at milepoints 2.202, 2.546 and 3.632, south of Hazard and north of the Knott County line. The construction will impact travel between Hazard and Whitesburg.

Passenger cars will be able to use local detours while the crossings are closed for replacement. A temporary diversion will be installed for the southernmost crossing. The middle crossing can be bypassed by using Happy Circle, and the northernmost crossing can be bypassed by using Ben Town Circle. Each crossing is subject to closure for up to 24 hours, but engineers estimate that each project should take only about 8 hours.

Work will begin on the northernmost crossing on Monday, Aug. 1, then will proceed to the middle crossing on Tuesday and the southernmost crossing on Wednesday. Construction of the temporary diversion for the southernmost crossing will also begin on Monday.

Trucks and other large vehicles will be unable to use the local detours. A signed detour will be posted using KY 7 between Isom and Jeff. Drivers may also wish to use KY 160 and KY 80 via Hindman as an alternate route.

After each railroad crossing is replaced, the road will be reopened, but milling and paving operations at the approaches to the crossings will be underway. Additional travel delays can be expected while this is ongoing.

Inclement weather may delay or extend the railroad crossing replacements. If adjustments to the schedule are necessary, motorists will be notified via the Department of Highways District 10’s Facebook and Twitter accounts using the hashtag #KY15RailroadCrossings.

Motorists should expect significant delays in this area, especially during busy travel times. Drivers should slow down as they approach this construction zone and watch for slowed or stopped traffic, and are asked to be aware of workers, traffic control devices and construction equipment when traveling in this and other areas where projects are ongoing.
