Episode 64: The James Baker Hall Foundation

2026 Governor’s Derby Exhibit

Inspired by the spirit of the Kentucky Derby, the 2026 exhibit invites artists to explore the idea of the “Long Shot.” Artworks should explore the ideas of risk, resilience, and the dreamers who remind us that anything can happen between the gate and the finish line.

Artists are encouraged to interpret the theme broadly, considering moments of courage, unexpected triumph, perseverance against the odds, and the bold act of believing in possibility. Submission deadline is April 14.

Dear Friends of the Arts,

Spring is arriving in Kentucky, and with it comes that familiar sense of renewal  ideas taking shape, creativity emerging, and communities gathering to share in something meaningful. That spirit was on full display at this year’s Kentucky Crafted Market.

While the Market looks different each year, what remained constant and unmistakable was the extraordinary talent of Kentucky’s artists. The Market once again brought together a vibrant community of makers, each showcasing new work shaped by skill, imagination, and dedication to their craft.

From intricate ceramics to bold visual art, textiles, wood and metal work, the weekend was a powerful reminder that the heart of the Kentucky Crafted Market is not just in numbers, it’s in the artists, the stories behind their work, and the opportunity to gather in one place to celebrate creativity at its highest level.

Moments of connection among artists, collectors, and visitors continue to define the Market experience. We are grateful to everyone who participated, supported, and helped carry this tradition forward.

The celebration of Kentucky’s creative voices continues this month with Kentucky Writers’ Day 2026, a cherished annual tradition honoring the rich literary heritage of the commonwealth.

This year’s event will be held Friday, April 24, at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in Frankfort. A ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Eastern in the Brown-Forman Kentucky Room. Poet Laureate Kathleen Driskel will be joined by former Poets Laureate Richard Taylor, Joe Survant, Sena Jeter Naslund, Maureen Morehead, George Ella Lyon, and Kentucky Youth Poet Laureate Esme Morris. Each wordsmith will share pieces and continue a conversation during a reception following the ceremony.

Writers and storytellers are also invited to step away, reflect, and create during Postcards from Pine Mountain State Resort Park, a special retreat taking place May 8-10. Led by Kentucky Poet Laureate Kathleen Driskell, this interactive New Kentucky Home writing workshop blends craft lessons with guided nature walks, encouraging participants to draw inspiration from the landscape and their own lived experiences. Whether you are an emerging writer or a seasoned voice, this retreat offers a meaningful opportunity to slow down, connect, and translate moments of quiet observation into powerful, personal work.

Behind the scenes, the Kentucky Arts Council is beginning the process of shaping our next strategic plan for 2027-2032. Your voice is an essential part of that work. We invite you to take a few moments to complete a short survey and share your thoughts on what matters most: what you value, what you need, and what you hope to see in the years to come. Your input will help guide our priorities and ensure that our work continues to reflect and support the creative communities we serve across the commonwealth.
