Dear Friends of the Arts,

As we enter the holiday season, it’s a time to reflect on the many ways the arts bring Kentuckians together in celebration, creativity, and community.

As you make your holiday plans, we encourage you to shop local and support Kentucky artisans. Whether you’re visiting a gallery, a holiday market, or an artist’s studio, every purchase you make from a local craftsperson or small business helps sustain the creative economy that makes our commonwealth so vibrant. When you buy local, you’re not just giving a gift, you’re investing in your neighbors and your community. Our Kentucky Crafted Artists offer a variety of options for even the most curmudgeonly person on your holiday gift list.

The KAC team is busy planning for November 24, when we’ll gather at Berry Hill Mansion for the Governor’s Awards in the Arts. Six outstanding individuals and organizations will be honored for their contributions to the arts in Kentucky. The Kentucky Arts Council solicits nominations for these awards and coordinates the panel selection process, and the awards are presented by the Governor of Kentucky. Their work reminds us that creativity isn’t just something we enjoy, it’s something that strengthens our communities, preserves our stories, and inspires the next generation.

Art award

Each awardee will receive a commissioned art piece from artist Aleta Stone. Stone joined KyArtsCast host Leeann Potter in this month’s episode to discuss the meaning behind the award pieces and the challenge of approaching the project with a new artistic process.

We’re also pleased to share that a new issue of Kentucky Folklife Magazine is now available, featuring stories from four of our Community Scholars — artists and tradition bearers who have participated in Kentucky Arts Council programs such as Teaching Art Together, Kentucky Crafted, and the Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeships. Their work captures the heart of who we are as Kentuckians: creative, resilient, and deeply connected to place.

Thank you for continuing to support the arts in your communities and across the commonwealth.
