Join Dr. Shauna Morgan in a conversation with Kentucky’s esteemed and celebrated operatic duo, Dr. Everett McCorvey and Alicia Helm McCorvey. Dr. and Mrs. McCorvey have made their home and based their careers in Kentucky. They will be the October guests on “Celebrating the Art & Culture of Kentucky: Some of the Bluegrass is Black.”
Register now for the October edition of the series that takes an in-depth look at the lives and careers of Black and African-American artists living and working in Kentucky. The interview will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 28 on Zoom. The event is free. Registration is required.
Everett McCorvey is endowed professor of voice and the holder of the Lexington Opera Society endowed chair in opera studies at the University of Kentucky. He is creator and director of the American Spiritual Ensemble. Alicia Helm McCorvey, a soprano, sings in Kentucky with UK Opera Theater, Woodford Theater, and the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra. She previously sang in the chorus with Metropolitan Opera of New York. The McCorveys have given concerts, master classes and workshops throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.
“Celebrating the Art & Culture of Kentucky: Some of the Bluegrass is Black” is part artist talk, part personal interview, and combines personal perspectives of the artist’s work, and meaningful conversations with both professional and emerging Black artists in and from the commonwealth. The series is hosted by Dr. Morgan and features a monthly interview with a Kentucky artist. Previous interviews in the series are archived on the Kentucky Arts Council YouTube channel.
