Seven Free Sites Will Be Open for

Flood Debris Drop-off

The Metro Waste Reduction Center will accept drop-off of residential flood debris Monday – Saturday, now through April 25. Six additional drop-off locations will be available starting this Thursday, and will be open Thursday through Saturday each week through April 25.

The free service is available for residents of Louisville only and it does not include commercial haulers.

No construction debris or yard waste will be accepted. To qualify for the free drop-off residents must present the attendant with two forms of identification verifying Louisville residency. If a citizen hires an individual or business to remove debris, the citizen must accompany the hauler to the drop-off center or provide the hauler with the same two forms of identification to present at the facility.

Residents who cannot drop off debris may request pickup service. Pickup requests must be sent by email no later than 5 p.m. on April 13 to swmd@louisvilleky.gov.

“From wet basements to flooded homes and garages, we’ve heard from many residents who have flood damaged items of all kinds. With multiple drop-off sites and the ability to request debris pickup, we hope to help the entire community get back on its feet,” Fischer said.

Guest Speaker - Kevin Kerstein

Hear Kevin’s favorites for Oaks and Derby and other interesting facts to get ready for the 141th Oaks/Derby. He has been doing the Churchill Downs Today Show and the Churchill Paddock Racing show since last year. He follows all the Oaks and Derby contenders year round and goes to the stables in the morning to watch them exercise.

Part of the Marketing and Broadcast team at Churchill Downs, Kevin is a horse racing fan first and foremost. A Philadelphia native, Kevin moved to Louisville to follow the horses that ultimately led him to Churchill Downs. Prior to coming to Churchill Downs, Kevin worked in radio and TV for almost ten years. When not at the track, Kevin is most likely found at a local Louisville restaurant or in the front row at a concert around town.

Fenley Family Cemetery

The Fenley Cemetery now sits forgotten and in neglect.  Just behind the River City Worship Center at 7515 Old Third Street Road you will find an overgrown, wooded area.  Upon closer inspection, you realize you have stumbled upon a cemetery with burials dating from pre-Civil War to 1969.

Fenley’s property stretched from what we know today as the southern boundary of Iroquois Park to the Outer Loop.  Upon John Fenley’s death, the property was passed on to his son, Isaac.  During this time, Palatka Road was known as Fenley Road.

Some of the grave markers in the Fenley Cemetery are a simple field stone with no writing while others are more elaborate and include symbols that provide insight into the lives of the deceased.

In 1903, Annie Fenley moved to California.  At that time, Hickory Grove and its land passed from the Fenley Family for the first time in 72 years.  The remaining acreage was sold off and developed into the neighborhood it is today.  Hickory Grove, the Fenley Home still sits at 5400 Hickory Hill Road.

We are looking for people that would like to help reclaim this forgotten piece of history.  If you would like to help, please call 641-8916 or 314-7711.

Litter is Lame. Let's Do Something About it

More than $11 billion is spent in the United States each year to clean up litter. That cost would go way down if every citizen made and followed a personal commitment not to litter. There are four main sources of litter :

  • Cigarette butts and other tobacco products 38%
  • Fast food packaging and other paper 22%
  • Plastic, mainly bottles and grocery bags 19%
  • Improperly secured truck cargo 16.4%

In addition to clean up costs, litter increases traffic accidents, harms wildlife, contaminates water, decreases property values, increases fire rates, and is associated with increased crime. Individuals can make a difference if they:

  • Always dispose of trash in proper receptacles
  • Teach children to do the same
  • Keep litter bags in vehicles for on the go disposal
  • Never throw anything from vehicle windows
  • Clean up after picnics and other outdoor activities
  • Cover trash receptacles securely
  • Firmly secure truck cargo
  • Pick up litter in yards or on sidewalks near homes
  • Volunteer for community cleanups

Report littering to MetroCall at 311 or 574-5000. If you include a vehicle license plate number and description, the offender will be sent a letter reminding them that littering is illegal, and that they could be subject to a fine. To start a community litter cleanup project call Brightside at 574-2613.

Catholic Education Foundation

has a new grant in the amount of $50,000.00 to award to families new to Catholic schools.  If you know anyone in your district who would like to offer Catholic schools to their children, please have them contact me at the number below or via my email, kdelozier@sna-panthers.org.  Families would have to bear some of the cost of tuition, but we have lots of funding available to help make it as affordable as possible.
