 Chairman of Public Safety, CM Yates voted to support a new Voluntary Drug Testing Pilot Program that the State has asked LMPD to conduct to determine if a driver is under the influence of narcotics.
Currently, LMPD says some tests can take up to six months to get results while these tests can show results in as little as six minutes.
“A test that can be implemented to prove that they [drivers] aren't under the influence could be a positive,” said public safety committee chairman David Yates.
State legislators will have to approve the program before it can be used to charge any drivers. The pilot program result will be used to determine if the program should continue state-wide.

Mark your calendars – Registration for the Brightside/Passport Health Plan Spring Community-Wide Cleanup opens on Monday! The cleanup will take place on Saturday, April 18th with the suggested cleanup times of 8:00am – 12:00pm. We know what you are thinking, “that’s the same day as Thunder Over Louisville!” You would be right. Due to the dates of Jefferson County Public School’s spring break and a couple of other major events in our city we felt that April 18th would be the best day for everyone. What better ways to prepare for a day of fun and fireworks than doing some good work to make our community Derby ready before the festivities begin! (If the date we have set doesn't work for your group, that's OK, we will support any cleanup that takes place in the weeks surrounding April 18th.)
 Brightside welcomes all groups, large and small, to participate in the cleanup. Simply register your group online at www.brightsideinc.org, or complete and return the downloadable registration form. All cleanup teams will receive bags and gloves at no cost, and the first 5,000 volunteers to register will also receive a free t-shirt! You won’t want to miss out on an exciting new design for our t-shirts this year made in collaboration with a great local artist and business owner, Jason Pierce.
WHEN: Saturday, April 18th, 8am-12pm. Pick up supplies on April 11th from 10am-2pm at Iroquois Amphitheater, 1080 Amiphitheater Road.
All supplies are pre-packaged by group
for team leaders to collect. If a group fails to pick up their supplies on
April 11, and they have t-shirts, the t-shirts go to other volunteers on a
first come first serve basis. Groups who do not have t-shirts can call
Brightside on Tuesday, April 21 to see if any t-shirts have been returned.
Supplies will also be available at our satellite location located at Joe
Creason Park, 1235 Trevilian Way, 40213 from 2:00- 5:00pm on Tuesday, April
21st and Friday, April 24th .
Brightside
is proud to be holding our Cleanup with the Mayor’s Give A Day Week of Service for
the third year. Cleanups are an integral part of Brightside's mission and
without the help of your volunteer group, and many other volunteers throughout
the year, we could not achieve our goals of a cleaner, greener and more
sustainable Louisville. We look forward to seeing all of you in April!
 More than $11 billion is spent in the United States each
year to clean up litter. That cost would go way down if every citizen made and
followed a personal commitment not to litter. A look at the four main sources
of litter reveals how easy it would be for each person to make a difference:
- Cigarette
butts and other tobacco products 38%
- Fast
food packaging and other paper 22%
- Plastic,
mainly bottles and grocery bags 19%
- Improperly
secured truck cargo 16.4%
In addition to clean up costs, litter increases traffic
accidents, harms wildlife, contaminates water, decreases property values,
increases fire rates, and is associated with increased crime. Individuals can
make a difference if they:
- Always
dispose of trash in proper receptacles
- Teach
children to do the same
- Keep
litter bags in vehicles for on the go disposal
- Never
throw anything from vehicle windows
- Clean
up after picnics and other outdoor activities
- Cover
trash receptacles securely
- Firmly
secure truck cargo
- Pick
up litter in yards or on sidewalks near homes
- Volunteer
for community cleanups
Report littering to MetroCall at 311 or 574-5000. If you
include a vehicle license plate number and description, the offender will be
sent a letter reminding them that littering is illegal, and that they could be
subject to a fine. To start a community litter cleanup project call Brightside

 Help your community by recycling! Our landfills are a finite resource with only so much space to hold all of our community's trash. Recycling as much as possible keeps reusable materials from going to the landfill and extends the landfill's life. Councilwoman Fowler has partnered with Solid Waste Management to provide a Recycling Bin at Sun Valley Park to allow Southwest residents to dispose of recyclable materials for FREE! (Only Paper, Cardboard, Plastic, and Glass are allowed. No hazardous materials or containers are permitted.)

 During the unofficial five month snow season between November 1 and February 28, Public Works generally patches about 8,000 potholes on Metro maintained roads—more than half the annual total in our year round patching effort.
Potholes result from a combination of water that seeps through cracks caused by normal wear and tear in asphalt, repeated freezing and thawing temperatures, and the weight of traffic. Cold temperatures cause the water to freeze and expand, weakening the pavement. The weight of traffic on the weakened pavement then breaks the asphalt, eventually leaving a hole that grows as more traffic goes over it.
Citizens are urged to report potholes to MetroCall by dialing 311 or 574-5000. Reports may also be made through an online service request at www.louisvilleky.gov/government/metrocall-311.
Potholes on interstate highways should be reported to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet at 1-877-For-KYTC (367-5982).

 The Better Business Bureau serving Louisville, Southern Indiana,
and Western Kentucky is proud to announce a new way for consumers to report
scams!
BBB’s Scam Tracker is a website that allows consumers to report
schemes and review other cases of fraud occurring across the United States and
in their local areas. Consumers can also see what types of scams are trending.
Each report details the scam, how much money the victim has lost
(if any), gives tips on how the scam works, and provides tips on what you can
do to protect yourself against scams.
Nearly 400 scams have been reported, so far, across the Country.
BBB’s President/CEO, Charlie Mattingly, says, “BBB Scam Trackers
allows the public to report con artists working the phones, emails, and
streets, not only in Louisville, but across the nation.”
Reported scams include IRS imposter scams, foreign lotteries,
sweepstakes, debt relief, fake tech support, government grants, work-from-home
scams, and more.

 Volunteers offer free service to help low income families with their tax returns
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is once again ready to help those who qualify to get the most from their income tax refunds during this tax season at the Sun Valley Community Center.
VITA is a program of the Louisville Asset Building Coalition. It is a free tax preparation program for low income families making less than $53,000 per year, or who are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit.

 Each
year over 1.5 million taxpayers receive a notice
of audit or request for more information from the IRS relating to their
individual tax filings. The Legal Aid Society is offering free clinics on
the steps a person can take in responding to an IRS notice. The Legal Aid
Society can help eligible low-income taxpayers respond to the IRS notices and
correct amounts in dispute.
The
Legal Aid Society also helps low-income individuals in disputes with the IRS,
including audits, appeals, collection matters, and tax litigation. Individuals
interested in these free services are encouraged to attend any of the upcoming
clinics offered at the offices of the Legal Aid Society, 416 W. Muhammad Ali,
Blvd, at 3 p.m. on the following dates:

clinics are open to the public but persons interested in attending should call

these clinics but who are interested in legal help may call this same number to
